I have a few areas near by where I can lob a sucker over the weedline and into some prime musky spots. My question is do I just let the sucker settle to the bottom outside the weedline or should I try some sort of float to keep it up off the bottom?

Use a slip bobber, quick strike rig, attend your line, and set the hook right away.

So how exactly does a sucker swim freely with a lift-off style quick strike rig? I was thinking about a treble through the middle of the back if I leave it under a slip bobber.

You'll have one problem with a slip bobber rig. The sucker will swim for the weeds and eventaully end up getting tangled in weeds. I haven't figure out a good rig to keep the sucker anchored outside the weedline. Any suggestions???

Location: Madison WI | I use a bottom rig in this situation and I fish predominately from shore. I would use a bell or slip sinker and then put some crimp on sinkers of the smaller size. You want enough weight on it that the sucker cant swim where ever it wants but not too much that it cant come off the bottom a bit. |

A sucker on a typical quick strike will get tired and turn upwards---vertically in the water---under a bobber rig that is not moving. I would definitely go with the weighted rig on bottom and let the sucker do its thing with room to move away from the weight.
