I noticed that the two way radios at bass pro now have 36 mile ranges. Has anyone used these hand held radios? Do they work on the lake at long distances? How are they at 20 miles? Im looking at them for xmas. Any help would be appreciated.

36 miles in perfect conditions. In a city or heavy forest I bet they are rated for 2-4 miles at best. I just bought the Cobra 16 mile and have yet to try it. May take one to work tomorrow and see if I can call my wife which will be 8 miles away but its a straight shoot from my house to work with no obstructions. I will let you know how mine works.

Caveat Emptor.

I have a Motorola rated for 12 miles and depending on conditions it barely works at 2 miles with a direct line of sight and no obstructions.

I live and work using VHF radios. I've never tried, but I can't fathom a hand-held radio working more than a few miles. They just don't have the power and VHF freqs aren't known for traveling long distances, especially with the power available from hand-helds. From the helo, you'll often struggle to get 35-50 miles without a repeater site, and that's from 1,000'-2,000' AGL. They're good for line-of-site comms. My console mounted VHF in my boat will receive comms from high power origins up to 30-40 miles, but my longest transmission from it has been about 25 miles across LSC down to Sector Detroit...but like I say, that wasn't a hand-held.

Well, I got about 1.5 miles away from my house and n omore signal this morning on my Cobra (16 mile range) radio I just bought 5 days ago.... Got to work (5.5 miles) and nothing. I can see the smoke stacks from my house so it is a straight shot for a radio signal. Clear day too. Not very impressed with my new radios. Maybe you will have better luck. Try this, search your brand name and model numer on the radios you are looking at and searh google vs "review" and see what comes up. I am sure you will ifnd a lot of reviews about your radio.
