Posts: 378 Location: Michigan | I have several baits from a quality basement bait maker that are 10" long, and ~1.5" in diameter in both jointed and straights. Some of these run pretty good with little tuning. If needed, just a little adjustment left or right with the line tie, and its good. However, I cannot get several of the others to run at all. They go under for a second or two, then roll. No matter what I do, I can't get them to stay under and run properly. Generally will bending the line tie up or down, settle baits down? I have tried adding a split ring to the line tie, and it helps some of the baits enough to where i can run them. I still have a few that even with a split ring, they just wont run... I was hoping this crowd in the bait maker section could help out. Thanks.

| lips are crooked./ no fix for that unless you pull them and re-glue | |||

Posts: 184 | i would look at the lips and make sure they are straight. also weigh the ones that run great and weight the ones that don't run and see if its a weight thing- did the maker even see if they ran good before he took your $$$$$? i tune every plug before i ever take $$$$$ from people i know and think that everyone should.

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | I assume these are baits you are trolling, some baits work casting (sometimes the odd ones are the best twitching ones) but when you get them up to speed trolling they do not. Have you bent the line tie way over, with wood if you have a piece of wood that is heavy one side it can do that and by looking at the wood you can not tell. I had a prototype that looked fine (lip and line tie straight) but kept going to one side to the point that it would do what yours do and I kept bending it until it ran straight and it catches fish just fine now. Does the bait keep going to the same side? if so keep bending to one side, if it goes back to the other side then it is one that is sensitive to tuning and you have to play with it. If the wood is to light or to heavy bending the line tie up or down can make a difference. Check the hook hangers to make sure they are centered and you could also shift the weight to one side and see if that helps. On that note taking and off setting one hook hanger and bringing a bait back in tune with another can get a bait to get the odd stagger that gets them bit. Again individual pieces of wood can be funny sometimes if you can get it in tune it can be a magic bait. If the lip angle is on the edge of not right bending the lip can help also. There are guys that bend lips (the bottom tip) on grandmas so they hook the water better and troll faster. That is a little more serious of a mod though.

Posts: 378 Location: Michigan | Thanks guys. I am trying to run these 4+ mph, so may be pushing it... They roll the same way and i can't bend the line tie far enough in the other direction to get them to stop rolling. I have checked all the basics , and even comparing lip angles, consistency of dimensions, etc. All looks good. It mus be the variations in the wood. I will try weighing them to see if the weight varies. I will also try hanging weight in front of them... They are great baits with good action when they run right, and they catch fish, just can't get some to run. The maker will take them back and either tune them or replace them.

Posts: 994 Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | If they look like they want to run straight often times you can shave the lips to get things centered. Even baits that have the lips in crooked can sometimes be salvaged. Shaving though does make a bait that is right on the line, so hit bottom or cover and the bait could go into barrel rolls on ya or something like that. Just a thought before you tear into them.
