Hey folks-

I'm looking at upgrading my trolling motor to a 24V, but my budget is such that I'm looking at used motors. My question is - what information can I get about a particular motor from it's serial #? I know I can tell what year it was made... any additional info buried in the serial number?

Additionally... anyone have any opinion on how old is 'too old' when it comes to Minn Kota trolling motors? Any advice/assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Follow-up to my follow-up... Anyone have any opinion on how much of an improvement a 65lb 24V would be over a 50-55 lb 12V system? I'd like to get some more punch, but I don't want to throw money away for an incremental improvement.

I have a 65lb 24v on my Crestliner Fishhawk 1650 and it has ample power. The power dial has settings from 0 - 100 and 95% of the time i have the have the dial at 10 or lower and that keeps me moving plenty fast.

Unless you just need top end power in the wind etc, buy two new batteries and run the 12V with the batteries in parallel. You will get a lot more run time. Don't just buy a second battery to go with the old one. The old battery will pull down the new.
