Subject: Okuma EVx 8'6" heavy rod

I did a search and looked at all the good feedback on Okuma rods. I am looking to get a new, longer rod, and like the idea of a 8'6" rod that will store at 7'. I throw a lot of lighter, smaller style twitch baits like big game and crane, along with jerkbaits and medium to large bucktails (dbl 10s occasionally). I am looking for an all purpose rod that I can use for everything I throw. The only thing with the heavy rod is the lure wt is for 2-8 oz and sometimes I throw things lighter than this. Does anyone have any experience with lighter lures on the 8'6" heavy rod or any other suggestions for a good all purpose rod?

I bought the 8'6" XXH Okuma. I wanted a longer rod that would handle heavier baits than my 7'6" Premier MH. I actually went to buy the heavy and after talking to Jim at H&R - He suggested the XH or XXH based on comparing the backbone/tip softness to my Premier. So I figure with these 2 rods I am covered. As it turns out - it is a perfect all purpose rod for me. I had no problem throwing Mepps Gaint Killers ( 1.3-1.75 oz ) - and love it for throwing my bigger jerks, 10" weagle, TrueGlide Heckler topwater as well as double 10's. Last 2 trips I did not even pick up my Premier.
I would think the XH would be perfect for your lure weights? Hopefully others with the H and XH will post with more opinions
Hope this helps

I have the heavy and I really like it. I will throw just about everything I have with it. I do like my premier better for gliders. Eventually when I get another one I will probably get the XXH. Nice rod and love the fact that it is telescopic for storage purposes.

I have the XH and the XXH in the 8’6” length. I would recommend the XH for an all purpose rod. Mine is rated from 4-12oz. The XXH is rated from 4-16oz. I don’t agree with the ratings. The XH is good for most lures down to around 1.5oz and up to magdawgs. The XXH is limited to use with heavy stuff like magdawgs and up. The XXH does not have much tip action. I prefer to cast D10s with the XH as it has more flex for casting. Some would say it is too soft for fig-8s. I really like the XH for most situations. One note of caution, both rods are on the hefty side. If you’re going to do a lot of twitching, consider using a smaller lighter reel. I have the IDX400 with a power handle on mine which makes them a bit much for smaller stuff.

i have the XXH for large bucktails. I think it may be too heavy for the big stuff and would also suggest the XH for more of an all purpose rod.

Perhaps I will have to rethink a XXH being my next rod. I just want to make sure I have something that can handle pounders. Do you guys throw pounders with the XH?

In my opinion, the XH would not throw pounders well at all. I love the rod, but I would say baits up to about 8 oz would be the max you should throw with it.

The XH is the best rod I have ever used for casting pounders (including the Big Dawg).  It loads up very nice and really slingshots them out there.

Thanks for all the replies. It sounds like the XH would be a good all purpose rod and good for throwing smaller twitch baits and small bucktails. If anyone else has any comments, please post.
