| I've been experimenting with making my own leaders. 130# Seguar flourocarbon, tied using the Nail Knot tool they sell at R&H. I haven't had opne fail but I'd like to add a crimp for good measure.
1. What type/size crimps should I buy?
2. What kind of crimping tool is everyone using?
Also, I've been using the #4.5 Stay-Lok snaps, but I am considering going to a solid ring/split ring on the end. I've never had a snap fail, but I know it happens.
3. What type/weight/size of solid ring does everyone use?

Location: Contrarian Island | 1.3 mm double barrel sleeves. you can get a good crimper from Musky tackle online, Cabelas, rollies, thornes etc
I get the solid rings from Thornes....they only carry one size...they work perfectly
you can also just use the crimps and not bother w/ the tying....
simply mushroom the tag end w/ a lighter snug up and crimp
they are plenty strong w/ the crimp and mushroomed tag end |

I've been using Owner solid rings on my jerkbait leaders. Either #6.5 or #7.5, I'd have to check.

Location: Contrarian Island | the rings from Thornes are a little smaller/less ring thickness than those...i've tried the Owner rings as well as the Angler's Pal rings (you can get 20 of the 170lb ones on ebay for $2.85) but the ring itself is fairly wide, not the diameter all the way across but the ring...if that makes sense...the best ones I have found are thornes

| I used to use fluoro leaders for everything but am down to using them for bucktails and an occasional crankbait. I have broken/bit off three times and am replacing most fluoro with steel. |

| i use 180 exclusively ....have for the last 5+ yrs and many of my friends use the leaders I make them....all totalled easily 1000+ fish caught and released and not one bite off...i would never use 80....

| My friends and I all use Brad Nelson's leaders and have not had one failure ever! He makes a great leader and a great quickstrike sucker rig as well. |

Location: Canada | I've been tying my own leaders for a little while now and so far so good, no failed knots. No crimps. 125# Andes leader mono for trolling and 200# Seaguar fluorocarbon for casting. |

| Side note: 5 minute epoxy used with the knot will be 100% secure, simply add a little when tightening. Lighter and no potential crimp damage. |

| Bob, I thought about superglue, but I was afraid it might be brittle or react with the flouro and weaken it somehow.
Brad, if you're using 180#, you're not using any sort of knot, then are you?

Yup, I am tying 200# with a dab of superglue on my knot as it gets tightened. |

Location: Contrarian Island | no knot...1.6 mm double barrel sleeves if crimped right do not rub on fluoro and are strong as you need them to be...let's remember that "the weakest link is the weakest link", ie if your fluoro leaders will test at say 150 lbs and you are using 80 lb line....which breaks first...

I make all my own flouro leaders and use his knot. Easy, fast and STRONG. I have yet to have one break. Using #120 material
