Greetings
I bought a new saltist 20 for use with big blades. In approx. 1 out of 10 casts the spool locks in mid cast as though the anti-reverse engages for some reason. Could be operator error or a problem with this particular reel but I thought I'd run this past the brain trust before trying to contact Diawa. Thanks in advance for any assistance/suggestions here.

Are you backlashing or is the spool just stopping mid cast?

No back-lash - the spool just stops.

Are you positive you are not backlashing? I have the same reel, the same thing happens to me but I assume it's just backlashing. Occasionally I'll throw out a cast, the line will fizz up, bait will stop in mid cast and plop in the water but the backlash will have already worked itself out by the momentum of the bait and I'll have nothing to pick out. The reel over runs more often then most other reels I've owned, but now I have about half a spool of line and am better at reading the wind, backlashes aren't nearly as frequent.

same thing was happening to me when i first got mine and it's working great now. there could be something wrong with the reel though. wouldn't hurt to get it serviced this winter.

She's a fussy bee-yotch fer shure. Stick with her, and realize she has no magnetic brakes (or so I've been told). Mine perform best when I try to cast with as much speed as possible, even for the short-range casts. It seems they balk on lower speed casts.

It's a small backlash, it happens with this reel because there is no magnetic backlash control. You really have to be on top of the spool tension adjustment. I usually run mine a little tighter than normal. Also, I keep the spool less full of line than you think. Keeps the angles better for the line to fly out.

Once you get it down, this reel is a dream to fish with....

Thanks for the replies. I really like thie reel and will continue to play with the tension control and line fill until I get it right.

Try using 100-130lb braid, and U must keep the line on the spool as tight as U can.

My guess is that it's putting a loop of line around the cap that holds the pawl at the bottom of the line guide - which will stop the reel. Abu 7000's will do this regularly when casting certain lures too. Different line might help.

How much line do you guys spool up on this reel? I was thinking of buying one! do you guys put any backing on them too? I am assuming 80-100lb superbraid too!

LLS I put around 75 yards of line on mine that way I can fill 2 reels with a 150 yard spool of line and enough backing to fill it about a 1/8" from full.
