Clarence Kalkofen stopped by the house pretty regularly back in the 80's and 90's just to check in and say hello while out on his sales route or heading out fishing or hunting, and his little aluminum was a fixture for many years on the west end of Pelican Lake. Every Christmas, I could count on a copy of Knght's Solunar tables to show up with a card signed by Clarence.

He was one of the most innovative anglers I've ever met, and raised a couple sons into the sport as well, including JK, who didn't fall to far from that tree at all.

Jim called this morning to let me know Clarence had passed away at 102 years old.

I remember clearly a few years back when Jim and Clarence hunted a T zone on my land. I set Clarence up in a comfortable tower stand one afternoon when Jim had an errand, and went about 800 yards to the south to sit another stand. I heard Clarence's rifle bark about two hours later....but from way east of where he should have been.

I headed toward where I thought the shot came from, and was greeted by Clarence, who had gone walkabout, in the center of a high power line with one foot on his doe and his rifle over his shoulder; quite a striking pose against the late fall background. When he spotted me, he asked, " Well, how many OTHER 93 year old hunters do you think shot a deer today?"

None, Clarence, none at all.

I had the pleasure of knowing Clarence, he was definitely one of a kind. He will truly be missed!
