Muskie Fishing -> Lures,Tackle, and Equipment -> Shallow Invaders

How many guys actually use these baits? Shallow invaders are probably the lure I'm most confident throwing almost anytime. This is only my third season fishing muskies but I've caught more fish on the shallow invader than any other bait. I just don't hear much about them elsewhere. Most of my success has come by giving them hard 3-4' rips and pauses although I've also caught fish straight cranking them. They have great action in the water! I don't see how the "new" swimbaits like the shadzilla are really any different.
Just wondering because I never hear them mentioned. Am I the only one that loves these baits?

You're not the only one. The Shallow Invader and Shallow Raider both get good time in the water - usually as twitch baits.

Seen a lot of fish on them but only one in the boat. High pressure lake though. Love the action of the bait and can't wait to see it get t-boned out from the boat.

Fantastic bait for new muskie fishermen in your boat. Easy to use and catches fish. My only issue is that sometimes they grab the tail and don't get any hooks but that can be fixed by adding a trailer hook.

kustomboy, would be great if you could explain/post a pic of how you go about adding a trailer hook to yours.

The modifications have been on here a few times. Here are a couple links. The wire extention is a great mod.

Dave, in the photo at the bottom of the first linked thread they show an SI with a wire extension and there is still a split ring on the rear hook hanger. On the second link, no split ring. What is the idea behind leaving the split ring on the rear hook hanger? Can't see that it would do anything useful.

Thanks

Shallow Invaders Rule! My partner and I caught 3 of our 5 fish in the PMTT on them this year!(many in prefishing too) They also factored heavily for several other teams in the last event at the St. Louis River. Look at one in the water and its no mystery! The look and move like a fish! They are tough as nails and exactly the right size. I modify mine with the wire method described above with one minor difference. I make the extension beyond the second hook hanger very short(.5") and angle it down. Then use shrink tube to hold the hook straight. This prevents almost all hook fouling and my hook % is 90 plus!

There's a very good reason I own more of these than any other single bait in my collection. Looking forward to the day I can get my paws on a bigger version...

Wow.. I wish I knew what you guys are doing and I'm not...... I have at least 3 of these(Crappie, walleye, firetiger) and give them at least a few hours at a time and have yet to even see a fish on one... Hell.. you guys should buy mine up...

Definitely one of my confidence baits.

I've caught two fat fish over 40" this year on the Crappie and Tennessee Shad patterns.

The split ring makes it so you can have the wire shaft go straight through it. Otherwise you have to make a couple extra bends in the wire.

Try filling them with water. Make them suspend more. I've worked these in many different ways and have had success on all. You just have to play around with them to see how the fish like them on each day. Sometimes, I go 3 twitch, pause; 2 twitch loooooong pause, and sometimes I'll just rip them, then take in the slack. Heck, I've even caught them trolling 70' back over 50 FOW!!!

I hear you!
I have not yet caught anything on one of these but.love the way they look. My partner. Missed a good pike at boatside a few years ago on one and I have been hooked on these ever since. I just bought another one today (white), this makes number six. Looks like tomorrow I am going to try this rear hook modification.
