Posts: 2361 | Took my wife to Buckhorn state park Resort for her birthday and managed to get in 7 hours or so of fishing Sat pm and Sun Am. Unfortunately, they had just begun to draw the lake before we got there, and were dropping it around 8" a day at that time. Not an unusual occurrence, and fishing is still presentable during that period, but...it woulda been better if the level was stable. Fishing the main lake weeds still available, and snags up to the 10 foot basin, managed only one fish, just over 35" and that was it for seeing also. Did get to fish till dark Sat, but that was not the ticket either. Heavier bait fish school numbers noted below the weedy bend and downstream. But as always, no shortage of shad in the lake. Weather was pleasant, leaf fall about 1/2 done and not a big bother during my fishing time. Water temps ran from mid 60's lower, to right at 60 as you went up to the 10 foot basin area. Water color slightly murky, but very acceptable to me for musky fishing. No problem at all. Basin mostly full at this time, down 2.5 feet from summer pool? I usually fish this lake a couple times each fall, quite peaceful, pretty, never hit a real productive day, but fish are there for the work. Took a pic of the fish in the net, was rolled up in the line, and I call this fish a "Doug Johnson Special", and I'm sure he knows why when he looks at it! Also got up and fished the Cave Monday PM. Justin Mullins has repeatedly posted on how good the weeds are and how the fish are in the weeds. Hmmm...I believe him! After spotting all the stocker fish being dropped in at Twin Knobs, got out and worked Zilpo until I found the area I wanted to end the day fishing, scattered weeds, with mixed depths and clumps, but....before I got to the end of the day found another set of weeds that was heavily populated, and just stayed there. Unfortunately I was only able to wedge one strike out of aprox 8 fish and that was on a very small, bass sized hard swimbait, and the idiot angler set too fast, as he saw the hit, pulling it cleanly away. I got several fish to come up for pull baits in two colors but could not get one to commit. Bucktails never brought a follow, and the little swim bait got two fish moving but I decided it was very possible a second hit would not get hooked either. No action on gliders or cranks. Went away from the pull bait trying to find a bait they would hit, but never did. Needed an idiot caster bad, maybe two. Temps were mid 60s throughout the mid lake, and coves I checked, color was excellent, a murky green, and weeds were still green. I am suspicious that the wind had something to do with the distribution of fish I saw, usually this area has occasional fish, not stacked. The fish may have been biting in the thunderstorms in the AM, and probably will bite today with Tornados potentially coming through. Fish sizes ran from 30" to 40" size range. Did see one larger fish surface near the edge of Zilpo, on the drop, but probably just mid 40's. My depths I saw fish in were 3-6 feet, and could see lots of bait in this area. Weeds to 8-9 feet at this time, but I could not raise a fish on the deeper weeds, even though they looked mighty juicy. LOL, need some cheese to go with that? Weather down here has been stunningly bright and dry for the most part. This was my first KY trip since I got back. Lots of days I've had off have been in cloudless sky. But like always, my season is just starting...

Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | I see after years of teaching you are finely starting to learn about lure selection. Nothing wrong with a properly twitched Clown Grandma. You are learning "my Son". See you this winter, I have much more to teach! Sure wish there were weeds like that in MH. Doug Johnson Edited by dougj 10/27/2010 9:08 PM

Had some of best weather ever last week!!! We were able to boat five fish in four days: 31,38,40,41 and 42. Not the biggest but all were jumpers, four were on four suckers we brought down from Indiana and the fifth was on a shallow regular bulldawg. Thanks, Al

Posts: 91 Location: Knoxville, TN | I agree with DougJ about the weeds on Melton Hill. This time of year the fish are gorging on baitfish but they are nowhere near the places we get them from spring though late summer. We have put tons of time on the water searching for them and they just seem to dissapear. I have a feeling they are cruising the main channel chasing large schools of baitfish just like the stripers do. If we had weeds on flats adjacent to the channels, the muskies would definately use them. Melton Hill can be tremendous at times and a dead sea the next week. If anybody wants any info about some cabin fever relief fishing trips let me know. [email protected]
