I'm looking for some opinions from those of you that have switched from an Abu 6500 to a 7000 for pulling big blades and cranks. I have a couple 6500 with power handles I use and they do alright but I was looking at trying something a little better for just that purpose. Did the 7000 make that much difference in the retrieve of big blades? What about retrieve rate? Are you able to go faster or did the lower gearing slow it down unless you wind your arm off. Whats the amount of take up on a standard 7000C3?

Thanks
Tim

I think the pick up is about 23" per crank and yes they do bring in blades that easy but they are a big real that is almost impossible tp palm. you can bring blades in fast without winding you arm off but you do have to crank pretty fast if you want to burn them.

I have a narrow spooled 7000 that has a 4 to 1 retrieve. It is far easier to bring in big blades with it compared to a 6500 with a power handle. I tend to cup my hand underneath as opposed to side palming the reel and it makes the bigger reels easier to deal with that way. I don't care for using the foregrip, to each their own but I have better lure control twtching and jerking not to mention losing 6" of rod on a figure eight.

7000's make a huge difference. I don't have large hands and I can palm the 7000 with ease. Don't let Feidler convince you not to get one due to size. Night and day difference with hard pulling baits. 7000's all the way (as long as they are the push button style and not the lever style).

My 7000's that are filled to the edge of the shoulder of the spool pick up 25" with the 4.1:1 gear ratio. I have a few hsn's that are 5.3:1 and they pick up 29" of line per turn. 7000's greatly reduce the strain on your arms from cranking heavy and hard pulling baits.

Guys, I'm a new Muskie fisherman, but I'm a tourney catfisherman (Ohio River) and a HUGE Abu fan. I'm not as concerned with the size of the 7000's as I am the quality. I've had 7000ic3's, 7000HSN's and regular 7000's, but quality wise I'd much rather have a 6500 w/ Carbon Matrix washers and better ceramic bearings over the China made 7000's. You'll have to find an older 7000 before (or even if you can) you can find one made in Sweden. As bad as I hate to say it the Abu's from the late 90's seem to be better quality than most of what's out there today.

Right now, I'm throwing a couple Abu 6600 EXT's as I heard alot of the Muskie guys love them and an Abu 6500 Chrome Rocket. The 6600 EXT's are okay but I think there are better reels out there, especially for the price. The Chrome Rocket seems to be a good reel when compared to a standard 6500c3 and a 7000ic3.

I've recently downsized from having about 30 Abu's to 10 and I am not kidding when I said the newer "Maden in China" 7000's were the first to go. Does anyone else share my thoughts when it comes to the quality (or lack thereof) in the China reels?

The Abu's (7000s) I own that are made previous to 2000 are tanks. Never had any issues with them. Put new drag washers on them, clean them and replace the pawls is all they need.

Reels after 2000 never made it through one season without actually breaking to the point of being useless.

I palm them no problem. They work well for big blades. There are better reels, but I'm very content with them.

I have 3 7000's... 2 of the full width black 'big games' w/ 5.3 gears made in sweden, and a silver c3 w/ 4.1's made in china. None of them have given me any problems yet, including the c3. The c3 is one of the push button models so it's not exactly new, probably 6-7 years old.

Take your 7000's and send them to Hatteras Jack to upgrade drags, ballbearing, and basically turbo charge them. I got mine mag'd also. Really made a big difference and worth the xtra bucks
