| What tips can you give the folks here for making your own leaders, everyone has there own tricks?
Over the counter leaders just dont cut it...
I use 75lb ball bearing swivels, on .026 wire with good Berkley cross locks(which have improved by the way) to make a 12" leader.
Worth tackle has a C-clamp style wire tying devise that is cheap and does a great job. |

|
| I like using the snaps from Rollie's. He has the Berkley style snaps made from the original manufacturer, before Berkley snaps went down hill.
I use a lot of stranded leader 60#, always tied, not crimped.
I know several people who make solid leaders with just a round nose pliers and their thumbs. There is no need to buy a bender for that. You can make the leaders in the boat as you need them.[:p] |

| Goltz,
I bought two batches of Berkley snaps this summer....and they were awesome.... very hard to pull apart.
They really improved![] |

| Guys I must be missing something here.
If the muskies are tearing up terminal tackle as stated...
quotes"
"It just bit through the Bucher wire leader like it was two pound mono"
"Ball bearing swivel broke on the hookset"
"I had a fish about 40 in long last year cut a single strand leader in half"
...how is making your own leaders going to correct things like this? |

|
| I use stay-lokt snaps by stringease tackle. So far so good. Also use an aussie swivel. 120#flourocarbon or single strand steel.I consider this to be the weakest link between me and the fish.Always go heavy. If it hurts the action of your bait.Put on a bigger bait.Unless you'r not fishing for the same trophy as I am. |

|
| I tie about a 6-8" long leader using single strand, Tooth Proof wire that you can buy at a Fleet Farm. 124# test with a haywire twist on each end. Use a E-Z twist leader maker to make my twists. I tie my line directly to one end, and attach the other end via split ring on the lure. I split ring every lure I have. Don't trust any swivels or snaps. |

| LOL!!! Musky Mike hit her on the head! [;)]
I have seen in person the Cisco/Krappie method + indeed is a nice setup...I make me own + both tie + LIGHTLY crimp; never had one break yet + have hung some BIG rockfish + salties on them...the single solid strand + now do like the Pay Day converts mentioned above![:sun:] |

|
| I use either Berkley snaps or heavy duty split rings. The snaps work better when your hands are cold or when it's dark out and you don't want to fumble around with the split ring pliers.
I bend the wire using a nail stuck in a vise the same way I do when I make my bucktails. Use a needle nose vise grip to hang onto the end of the wire and spin it around the wire nice and tight. Takes about 2 minutes to make a leader. All my sevenstrand leaders are tied not crimped.
Where besides Rollies does everyone buy there snaps, wire, etc? |

|
| Musky Mike,
How old was that leader? and was it used on many fish before? and how was it tied?
If you take a solid wire and bend it over and over again it can snap with ease.
Maybe something here can prevent such a problem from happening in the future.[;)] [:)] |

| The leader that failed on me was brand new, I made a habit of putting on a new leader every morning while at LOTW, Doug showed me how he makes his leaders so next time I get to Bass Pro Shops I will get some material and try to make my own, will they be any better that Brand Name leaders? I don't know but it will be a lot cheaper so i can replace my leaders more often

| Another gooder one by Jason; the 10 second rule also applies to us married folks! [:0] |

|
| I use crosslock snaps from stamina inc and a good ball bearing swivel, both the 150 lb variety. I tie my 80lb flouro now thanks to matt collins for showing me the knot to tie. I also put a drop of superglue on the knot just in case. |
|
| |
|
| I use pretty close to the same procedure CiscoKid does (PK method). Except I use 90 lb single strand wire and attach a 100lb barrel swivel to tie my line to (due to smaller diameter wire I'm using). I also attach my lures with a split ring. I have not had any leader failures since making my own beginning in '97. Prior to that I lost several fish (and lures) to terminal tackle failure. One of these episodes resulted in the death of a 25 lb'er which I found dead a week after my leader failed and she left w/my crankbait solidly attached sideways in her mouth. |

|
| im not sure what you mean by tying your 7 strand>? if you tie a square knot all the pressure is still on the crimp. is there a special kind of knot you use? i personally use 2 crimps on both ends (4 total). |
|

|
| I like to use heavy wire...just because it won't bend very easily. I use .045 or .051 bucktail wire with a 100-175 lb crane swivel at one end (cheaper than ball bearing) and the biggest berkley snap at the other end. Someone mentioned barrel swivels....I have seen line twist like crazy using a barrel swivel. I don't think they are good enough for leaders personally. |
