Just got my new Abu Garcia 6500 C3
Comes with a bottle of oil. Should I use it now or is it already pre-oiled ? The instruction manual does not say.
What parts need oiling ?
Thanks,

| MK,
The one item that should be oiled regularly (at least once per day) is the level wind worm gear. It should be pre-oiled, but it wouldn't hurt to put of drop on it now. I also regularly disassemble my 6500's and clean, oil, and regrease the main drive components (2X/summer). |

| I oil my reels about twice a week under heavy use, and less if they are not getting pounded. I use a good teflon reel oil, or my Outers Gun Oil, which seems to be really superior stuff.
We had Chuck Brod online once a while back, and he did say one can over-lube a reel.[:sun:] |

| You sure can over oil/lube a reel. I know, I did it. After over 20 years of faithful service a couple of my Abu's started acting up, had to crank the drag setting clear down in order to retrieve any line. I thought the years had finally taken their toll and I'd probably have to replace them. Sent them in for service first before deciding for sure and they came back as good as new. Only thing they required was a thorough cleaning to remove excess lubricant and then a light oiling and greasing. That was 5 or 6 seasons back and they are still going strong. You need to keep them oiled and greased, but you also have to be careful not to overdo it. You can kill 'em with too much kindness.
