Subject: Diawa Saltist 30 vs 40 levelwind reels

I was all set to buy a Saltist levelwind 40 and the guys at Cabelas tried to talk me down to the 20 or 30. One sales guy who said he fished muskies a lot thought the 30 was more than adeqaute for burning DCG's but most of what I read on web site posts seems to say to go with the higher line pick-up (47") on the 40. It seems to me that the 40 might be superior for specific applications like DCG but maybe the 30 is a little more versatile? Also, with the levelwinds now about them same price as the open/conventional Saltist reel is there any reason to consider the 30 (or 40) open reel (they both have the 47" pickup and the 30 open is a bit smaller). The opens are heavier and have more BB's. Are the opens more durable?

Opinions from people who have tried/used both?

The 40 level wind is a monster...very big and bulky.   I went with the 20 level wind for casting and use the 40 for other applications.

I love my 30, its great for double ten's. I might even go down to the 20 for casting because I can hold it easier.

Buy the 20,it will do everthing the 30 will do and you dont need 350yds of line. The 40 is extra bulk you dont need...

I have a 20 Levelwind and find that i can palm the reel without to much difficulty. I have smaller hands and i thought the 30 or the 40 would be to big. However if you dont palm the reel you shouldnt have an issue with the bigger size. I love my 20. Pulling 10's all day is alot of work but the reel cetainly helps.

I used a 30 and it was too bulky for my taste, if I were to get one I'd buy the 20 so that I could palm it.

I bought a used 40 on here only becuase at the time there were no used 30's and the price he wanted was a price I could not pass up. Now I am working on a 30 as well. I want them both

30 is plenty - you will feel better at the end of the day too. dont plan on burning burning any larger bucktails for very long - u can burn small stuff with them.
