I went fishing at French Lake in MN on Sunday. No fish on, but saw lots of them on the finder. Someone even suggested fishing shallow (2-3 ft) and still nothing. What is up with these fish lately?

That was my first time ever fishing that lake. I have been told of big musky being caught there, but I havent heard anything good this year about it. I pretty much through everything I had.

My experience- I have found it to be a better cool water lake than a summer lake. My previous PB (until this summer!) was caught from there trolling in October.

Gotta remember it's a small body of water and gets allot of pressure. I have not gone over at all this year but have been told it has not been a good year over there. Last year was a peak maybe.

Like Jake said,
That is a small body of water with a lot of pressure and not a lot of structure to hide in. Especially with a new muskie chapter down that way it even has a few tournaments. Those fish have seen everything, but I think it is a good thing that the water clarity is so bad, this may cause the fish to rely a little more on their lateral line instead of visually. Last year we had little rain and extremely low water. No offense to fiberglass boats, but that kept a lot of big boats of the lake. I saw multiple occasions where guys couldn't get their bunks wet and would back in and then leave. When the conditions are right, like previously stated, don't be afraid to go SHALLOW. With the lack of weeds post summer sometimes the ski's use docks as structure. Personally for me, French is one of those lakes that if the fish are not moving, you will not see anything (aside from the stained water) all day. But, if you time it right, you can have multiple fish days just by applying the same presentation and hit all the main spots that hold fish. PM me if you need a little help. If been pretty successful on this lake.

I've heard time and again how it's a cold water lake, they bite all year round same as any other lake, you just gotta be the right one throwing a lure that day. Average Saturday you'll probably have a 1 out of 30 boat chance of being the right stiff to put your lure in front of a hungry girl. On a 700 acre lake with minimal structure that is. Anyone say mary-go round??? Good lake, just allot of pressure for a few fish on a few spots. Easy to learn though and it has fish, just wish more lakes down below the cities had Musky....

And the club doesn't have a couple tourneys per year, they have two club outings during the week in June and July that include something like 7-10 boats. This is in leiu of their monthly meeting those two months. Not really a tourney In my opinion.
