Posts: 97 | How much wire line do you guys/girls put on your reel? I was also wondering how you attach it to the backing and what type you use?

Wire line? I guess I really don't spool any on my reel. I use Cortland Bronzeback and like it. Are we fishing sharks or muskies here?

Posts: 97 | It's for musky, it gives you an instant response on your turns.

Posts: 40 Location: Canada, Eh! | you don't need a lot. just like with braid, 75 yards would be more than enough. we typically troll with 30-60' out. Edited by boost 7/9/2010 1:55 PM

just use a extra light action rod like a ugly stick with door stopper spring at the end. be sure to set the drag far from tight. very good for precision trolling pass during the fall

Todd, I use wire line with an older salt water reel with all steel hardware. The rod has a roller tip best used while holding the rod. If you use it on a down rod, I would use a spring tip, 50lb wire is good. You could get just about any lure down as deep as you want. A haywire twist is all you need.

Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | They do make special rods for them as the wire can beat your rods up pretty good. The main things are to have a tip that can handle it (a twilli tip or a roller tip). For muskies, the twilli tip would be better for down rods so you don't get floaters in the tip and also have to worry about the wire popping off the roller. They tend to run a little more than regular trolling rods, but they aren't out of control in price. I think Shimano makes a wire rod for around $70 if I recall correctly? (could be wrong, it's been a while since I've looked).

Posts: 81 Location: Toronto, Ontario | 40# monel, Malin or AFW, is nice....definitely prefer it to SS wire. 20# mono backing with a very small barrel or bb swivel attached to the wire line of which I usually add about 300' spool. You can spool up a 600' spool but it's not necessary. Twili ("spring") tip is better than a roller tip (which is best suited for multi-strand wire) as you don't get the more severe line angles that can kink the line. An 8' St. Croix Premier glass musky trolling rod with a twili tip would be perfect for trolling wire line....single strand line is "annealed" and very smooth, won't hurt your line guides at all; multi-strand wire will saw them for sure, but not single strand.

Posts: 1906 Location: Oconto Falls, WI | I am no expert, but this is what I did based on info from JP Bushey. He is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to wire. I believe I put on the whole spool of 40# monel wire. I think it was 300’. Haywire twist is what I used. I have a homemade twili tip. If I remember I’ll take a picture and post. Don’t know if any of it works though as I have yet to catch a fish on the set-up. ;( Guys out East and Canada are the most knowledgeable when it comes to wire.

Single strand wire is great for short lining as well. You can use the haywire twist and leave an extra tag to make a hook to catch weeds...the lures give off more/different vibration and sometimes that is what the fish like. Also be really careful when you are letting line out, a free spool mistake pretty much ruins the wire. Also landing a fish on wire is great, you really get a different experience.....BR
