looking for a good musky guide for 1 to two days for musky. have caught three 48.5 and 2 49's but have yet to hit that pig that exceeds 50. would love a low 50's or better but who doensn't . any suggestions on guides that are good and reputable for lakes in minnesota. thinking vermillion, milacs, or any lakes that are bigger in body of water that hold em as well leech, cass? any suggestions on what lake you would pick to have that one chance at a pig and more important what guides are good as well. late august to sept is my main time frame.

If I only had one chance to go after a giant fish over 50, there is no doubt who I would try and go with, Mike Crawford is the man up in northern MN. I don't know if he still guides up there, but he was always dialed into giant fish. I fished 2 years ago with him for two days in late Sept and we probably saw 20 fish over 50inches and managed to each catch a 52 inch giant along with 5 other fish all over 45. I will see if I have his info still and post it. I'm pretty sure that he still lives in the Bemidji area. He would definitly be my number one choice, well worth the money spent.
no doubt

Lot's of good guides over there. Guess it depends on where you want to fish.

Kevin Cochran in the Cass Lake area. Mike Crawford also knows this area very well, not sure if he's guiding anymore.
Jason or Luke on Mille Lacs.
Jim Murphy or Chad Cain on Leech.
Brad Hoppe on Miltona.
Jerry Sondag on DL or Pelican.
Matt Snyder on Vermillion.

Good shot at a 50 with any of the above.

Justin if he doesn't get a 50 you should pay him 600! since you are "guaranteeing it"...
those guides don't boat 50s every day or even every other day on avg so it's a crap shoot whoever and wherever you go...
any one of those guys will be in the right spot for it to happen though...

IF you want a lot of time on the water for your buck, this guys opinion for Mille lacs is Paul Schlagel at enduro guide service. I paid for an 8 hour day ($350) and while discussing things early in the morning he stated we would fish until I couldn't fish anymore. Well we started at 3:30 A.M. and finsihed up at 1:30 the next morning... we did take a 3 hour break in the afternoon to recharge but then we were right back at it.Almost 20 hours of fishing for an 8 hour trip. Our biggest was 45.5" that day with 2 fish caught, but 50's dont just appear because I want them to unfortunately.

Don't forget Gregg Thomas. One of the hardest working guides out there and alot of fun in the boat. Last September we put 3 fish over 50" in the boat in about 20 minutes. A 50' is never gaurenteed but you never know what the next cast is going to bring.

I back up Justin.......a 50 inch fish in Minnesota these days is called a Medium fish.
I would say almost half the trips to lthe V produce at least one fifty plus with an average of around 52......not a big deal. Had the whole east end of the lake to myself last weekend because people were afraid to fish in 20 mph. winds.....party on.....Todd Clevelands new 13 inch( proto) trolling bait rocks.....Thanks to Wayne Klems for the borrow.........

I would need my next 300 muskies to be 53" to obtain your average. Sounds like you are doing pretty good by yourself!

I think a lot of guides in Minnesota are good choices. While it may cost a bit more money, by hiring a guide for 2 or 3 days in a row I think your chances would go up quite a bit of accomplishing your goal and I think most guides in Minnesota would agree. I was speaking with Dave Williamson of Musky Stalker guide service yesterday and received permission to use his name. I have known Dave for quite some time and think he would be an excellent choice. I know I have put a lot of big fish in the boat thanks to some tips he has given me and am thankful for that.

Like mentioned find a guide that is willing to spend some time on the water. Nothing is guaranteed with a guide but spending more time on the water helps the odds a little. Nothing worse than a guide that's strictly 8 hours from time of unloading to back at the dock. Other than the ones mentioned Hulbert puts in his time as well and he's always in contact with other guides on the water trying to help put together a pattern.

I would recommend Jeff Andersen. He does a ton of multi species but has always put us on big fish. Including my biggest which was a 54 inch monster! Check his website at www.jeffandersenfishing.com.
