Posts: 642 Location: Richfield, MN | If you only had $20-30 dollars to spend on a must have lure what would it be. I would like to see what you guys/gals say are a must in every tacklebox. I do not have a tackle box yet but I have boughten a few baits on here and I am needing more. BUt I am still trying to get a hold of a couple of nice used rod and reel setups but I still do not think I have that must have bait yet. With that in mind I really do not even know what all the baits are called tha I do have. So when I get a list of must haves from everyone that is kind enough to post on this I will have to look them up and compare with what I have!! Once again I appreciate everones help on here. Being a true newbie to musky fishing this site has been a blessing in getting the help I have needed to get started. This is truely one of the best fishing forums I belong to. I am belong to a ton. So thanks to all for your help in the past and for all the help I will be needing going forward. Thanks Mike

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I don't think there would be any question that I would try to find a H20 Hardhead. Granted, I think this bait is still just a little under $30, and you have to buy a $7-$15 weight kit to utilize the bait's full potential. BUT, once you have all that, you really have several baits... These are kind of like a jerkbait with a screw on rubber tail. Kind of like a cross between a Phantom and a Bulldawg. They have inserts where you can screw weights into to adjust the depth. Anywhere from hopping the bait just under the surface in shallow weeds to weighting it heavy and ripping it down deep in open water and off the breaks. I have said many times that I could fish with ONLY this bait all year long and have confidence in it. I literally catch fish on mine all year long. http://www.h2otackle.com/pages/pull-baits/hardhead.php curleytail Edited by curleytail 8/1/2010 9:19 AM

Posts: 285 Location: Price County WI | We have store brand bucktails for $10.49, I would buy one Black with Nickle blade and one Yellow with Gold blade and fish them against anything out there anytime of year. They have caught fish since the start and will keep catching fish for years to come.

There really isn't any one lure that is a must have to the exclusion of all others. Nor is there any one color pattern that is better than all the others. There are basics that cover a lot of water: shallow, medium and deep. It seems to me that for starters on a budget I would keep it to spinners and crankbaits. For spinners I would want one silver blade and one gold blade; one black tail and one brown. For cranks I would like 6" Jake, 7.5" Grandma, 7" Believer, and 8" Depthraider. That covers a lot of water. But I would also like a few pricier things, like the 5.5" and 6.5" Wiley. Stick with lures that have a proven track record.

w pa muskie bound - 8/1/2010 1:39 PM what ever i would pick or 2 , it would be in natural colors. I used to think this way. However, lately I have seen some bright and gaudy lure colors out perform the natural looking stuff. Buy 2 proven lures................I define proven as many, many people talk about them and have had success.................and get a 1 natural and 1 bright of each. That's 4 lures. If you can't do that.......musky fishing might be to expensive for you. Some options: Hellhound Depth Raider Triple D Ernie Top Raider Bulldawg

Posts: 210 Location: VA | Without question for me it would be a walleye hellhound and a 8" perch believer. If I got a deal on them, I'd use the extra $$ and buy a black suick. DR

Posts: 196 | I would have to say a black muskie innovations chatterbait! or a black and orange.....that lure has had more follows, bites, and catches than anything else we have. Hope this helps....by the way, it also covers alot of water fast and can be fished at nearly any depth.

Very basic. If you are fishing clear water, I would start with natural fish finishes on your lures, say, sucker, $9 bass, perch, walleye. If you are fishing dark water, you might want to brighten up. But I wouldn't go any further than firetiger to start. Good luck.

Posts: 131 | If you going to start out with one or two lures only, focus on ones that have good hooking percentages. I'd definitely get one bucktail, probably a Black-Nickel or similar. Although double #10 Colorado blades really work, I would not recommend one for one of your only lures as a beginner. These baits can tire a guy out if it's all you throw, especially without specialized equipment. Just get a single blade or double bladed bucktail with smaller blades and you will be less likely to get discouraged due to fatigue. The other bait I'd get is a spinnerbait. Most versatile bait in my tackle box. Can be fished shallow, deep and through weeds and cover. A brighter color here that will be seen in the depths or in the weeds would contrast that black bucktail nicely. You don't have to spend a lot of money on either of these baits to get a well made and effective lure.

Posts: 1059 Location: Medford, WI | Many great baits listed and many I would recommend. May have missed it, but I can't believe no one mentioned three of my top baits... Mepps Musky Marabou - so many fish caught on these and now everyone's caught in the 2x10's that the fish don't see these as much. Shack Attack Curly Sue - most fish I catch are on these. An 11" one that I have has caught 16 fish with 5 over 45" and is still running great. Poe's Jackpot - Yes, I like the weagle more but I still catch a lot of fish on the jackpot and I think it'd be better for starters. -Jake Bucki

Posts: 115 | If I was going to only buy one lure, it would be a jig and a shad body. A 1 oz and 5/8 oz J-Mac and a pack of Lunker City Shaker shad bodies. With the jig and shad, I could buzz the surface, swim the jig high in the water column like a bucktail, slow roll the jig across the bottom like a spinnerbait, jerk it like an erratic jerkbait, and easily fish through weeds and open water. And do it all on bass flipping stick or heavy spinning rod. I prefer shad colors. Black jig and an Alewife shaker shad body. For a little spice, I'd replace the shad body with a big grub Kalin's mogambo or octogambo grubs. Texas Shad grub for a great shad color. Then I'd get on the water as often as possible.
