Headed up to Big Round for the weekend. It will be my first time up there and I only have the weekend to fish it. It is such a large lake and I also hear that it is very clear. Any ideas for good places to start or lure suggestion for the lake? I'm packing more natural colors and planning to fish mostly during low light/night hours. Any tips or experience would be great to help shorten the learning curve. Thanks in advance. PM me if you'd prefer.

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | try trolling until you find some nice deep structure to mark on your GPS, then throw big rubber. I wouldn't have the boat in water shallower than 12 to 15 feet at any time, and don't have too high of expectations. Big Round is a tough nut to crack.

If you are going to troll, watch out for the cribs, they like to steal lures

Well, made it back from Big Round. First off, I must say Big Round is an awesome body of water to fish. There is just about every type of structure in the lake, perfect size, not a lot of hazards to watch out for, and all around seems like an excellent fishery. Although a 28" baby is the only ski I managed to get in the net, I had multiple other follows with one fish definitely in the 50" range. Had another 38-39" fish going around in the 8, miss the bait completely and take off. Another mid 40" fish exploded on a pacemaker 10' from the boat and I yanked it. Caught 3 nice size northerns, biggest being 34" and a bunch of smallies during the day. So, for my first time on Big Round, I was pretty happy with it. Had a good chance to learn the lake a bit and will definitely be going back. BTW, I was getting action on almost everything. Caught the shorty on a depthraider, had two other fish following bucktails, one blow up and another follow on a pacemaker. Not much of a troller but dragged baits from spot to spot a couple of times to no avail. Awesome lake though. Living in Antigo, I would compare Big Round to Pelican - being similar size and structural elements, however, I wish Big Round was in my backyard instead.

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | Sounds like a pretty eventful weekend. The highlights of my trips out there are usually ribs and 22oz tappers at Famous Dave's.

Eventful to say the least. Saturday night during the storm, a large branch broke off a tree and landed on the hood of my new truck. Nice 10" crease in the hood. Then, the wife hit a stump with the trailer down the logging trail while I was waiting for her at the landing. Bent the fender into the tire and she had to get help from some guy (lucky to find considering where we were) to bend it back meanwhile I'm waiting at the marina. Then on the way home, somehow my trolling motor deployed onto the highway. Grinding off half of the trolling motor skag and breaking a fin on the prop. Expensive weekend but I still had a great time and loved it up there. Just wish I had a whole week up there. And I was surprised I had as much action as I did considering what everyone was saying... hard to fish, tough nut to crack, etc... Only managed a 28" but still at least saw a couple big ones too.

Posts: 101 Location: mn | Glad to hear you had some action. Sorry to hear about you troubles. I will be heading up to Round a week from today and was wondering if you had any info on water temps and lake level? A friend informed me that Round is low. Could this be true? Thanks for any info. Posts: 578 Location: Germantown, WI | Wow, i haven't been on Big Round in over 25 years. When i was a kid i caught a 38" musky (which at 5 yrs old seemed like a whale) on this lake and have loved the species ever since. It was cool as I even got my photo in the local Hayward paper at the time (1979). I believe my family stayed at a place called Sun n' Snow resort. I had a great uncle who guided up there and knew this lake like the back of his hand, and we always did very well there in the late 70's and early 80's ( a lot of northern and walleye from what i remember). I have fished many lakes in that area since and always thought i shouldgo back to the place it all started for my love of muskies, but just haven't done it yet! smellslikebass, It was my first time on Round so I can not say how much the water levels are down. There are obvious points that used to be underwater but I don't know how long ago that was. Still, no real hazards to worry about and still great structure to fish. As far as water temps, my fishfinder is so cheap AND old that it tells me depth and thats about it so I really have no idea what the temps were. I just went out and fished with my map in hand. There really are good spots all over the lake. Musky Bay, Hinton Bay, Finger Bar, Walleye Bar, and Clays bar were the areas I fished for the most part. I will say, the landing at the Marina was in rough shape - I would not go there and pay 5$ considering there is a ridiculous mound of rocks from people powerloading and it was also very shallow around the island where you get out to the lake. The landing up by Hinton bay was good and is free. Edited by Musky Madman 8/12/2010 10:22 AM

Posts: 101 Location: mn | I'm in the same boat as you Chad. Fished everything else the last 5 years or so and its time to get back to Round. I hope there are still some fish in there. Never had good luck out there but its a fun lake with good structure and a few big wi fish I'd like to meet. It all started about 10 years ago when a buddy and I went to a friends cabin on Round . I had been saving money for a casting set up. Pastikas outfitted me with an abu, 7ft rod, a few leaders, pliers, net, a bucktail and a hogwobbler. That night about forth cast off the dock a monster came in and exploded on my wobbler. Didn't get hooks in the fish but I was hooked forever more. The next time up we got our hands on a 14ft boat and tried to get as much advice as possible. We were told to fish all night so we went to wallmart and got the brightest head lamps we could find. The fish didn't like that much but we did manage to locate many big fish and at least get a good look at them in the late night to early mornings. Many learning curves muskie fishing. Since then been contacting a lot more fish on close by lakes so haven't been back. Can't wait to beat the crap out of this lake again and at least try to locate something big. Its where it all started for me.
