In the market for a new reel probably with toss bigger jerks and DCG's with it. Which one should I get? I have eliminated them down to this.

Search the thread archive for DCG reels
It does not matter really unless you plan on burning the DCGS a A LOT of the time
I would go with the Calcutta TE best money ever spent!

I have no experience with the Toros but you will not be disappointed with either the Luna or TE. Both awesome. Both expensive...especially the TE. The major difference between the Luna and TE is first price, and second, in my opinion, the TE has two anti-reverse features which makes it especially appealing for large jerkbaits like you mentioned. Since you'll be realing in big bucktails, the High Efficiency gearing of the TE will save a little on your body too. Good luck

Big careful with the luna with jerkbaits and twitchbaits. the anti reverse goes out very quickly.

as far as lunas go, my two five year olds have been flawless for everthing without one single glitch! but for db 10's my avet sx 2 speed gets the call and i also use it for heavy plastics and it shines!

Shimano TE is one of the best all around reels U can buy, with 5.1:1 gears that are 38mm tall this reel will have power to move DCG 10 all day long, you won't burn them but nice easy 25" inches of line pickup. The Toro reels you have a choice with 4.7:1 great for slow rolling DCG10 at night, the 5.4:1 best all around gears and 6.4:1 for picking up slack line from a topwater or jerk bait. The Toro has 38mm tall gears just like the TE reels so the Toro will have the same power as a TE reel. Also the the Toro has dual anti - rev just like the TE and has now-disengaging levelwind sytem just like the TE. The Luna is a great reel but it does not have dual anti-rev so don't use this reel for jerk baits and the gears are 32mm tall so this reel will not have the power like the TE or Toro reels. The Luna does have a 6 drag disc system and the TE and Toro have a 4 disc drag system.

Having already replaced my Te's with Lunas, I am now leaning towards doing the same with the Toro, based on continued instant anti issues with the luna. Seems fewer problems with anti reverse on the Toro than the Luna, which is important if you at all rely on it when jerking(as I unfortunately do). Lunas are a great topwater/standard bucktail reel, not so much for jerking imo. That said, although I've had a few issues with level wind over the years and finally an instant anti, the Penn 975 has been pretty solid too. For sole double 10 duty, you might look into one of the Penns,or a Daiwa Saltist. They are built for it no doubt. I use the smaller 200 series Curados for walleyes on up to light Musky twitching and like them. I have heard good things about the 300 version.

Lightning,
Read Pikemaster's post carefully, he nailed it.
Also, I agree with Reef Hawg that the Penn 975 looks to be a beast for dbl 10's as well.
The way I'd some it up is, the TE is the best all around reel.
The Revo toro 60 in the 5.4-1 is close. At that point I'd probably make my decision based on whether or not I want a low profile reel or not.
All the reels your considering are excellent.
Good Luck

I used Toro's last year and they work pretty good. Picked up a TE in Chicago and will give that a try. Sad to hear the gears are the same size tho. Picked up the TE because I think I like round better. Might sell 1 of my Toros,as I have 3.

instead of the luna, look at the st croix AC300. Same real, cheaper and serviced right in PF, Wisconsin.

I have 3 of these and they have held up pretty well. I have been throwing everything in my tackle box with them. Caught fish, been snagged, been in snow/rain/cold/hot... and they are working pretty well.

Luna/St. Croix AC300. Just call St. Croix and have a couple of the anti reverse rollers in your tackle box....takes 5 minutes to change. But if you change it out each winter you won't need to worry about it anyways. Otherwise it's bullet proof and proven.

so the same anti reverse rollers will work in the same model luna? How much are extra rollers?

I actually have a Luna also. I will open it up and take a look tomorrow but i would bet it is. The part is $10 from St. Croix. They have actually sent a couple to me for free. And i've paid for one also.

I recently used a new Toro 60 Winch and it could handle anything I threw at it...It pulled cowgirls like a champ, threw pounders with ease and ripped crankbaits unbelievably well with minimal resistance. It was paired up with an 8'6" Elitetech prototype big bait rod. This combination was phenomenal. I am getting rid of my Luna and Abu Garcia 7000 iHSN in the Rollie and Helen's custom and going to all Revo Toro 60's for this upcoming season. I already own 1 Revo Toro 60 which I have been very happy with and a Calcutta CTE400 that I put a power handle on and will add another Revo Toro 60 and a Revo Toro 60 Winch to my arsenal for the upcoming season. I would highly recommend the Toro's. Their low profile reduces a ton of the stress that used to put on my wrist by trying to palm the bigger profile reels.

Lightning, if you're considering a reel for big blades and big jerks, I don't think you can do better than a Calcutta 700TE. It has awesome power and all the speed you'll need. It isn't quite as super duper fast as the Trinidad, but fast enough, and a much better all-around reel, in my opinion. I haven't used my Trinidads much after getting a 700TE. You were already considering a Calcutta TE, which I would assume means a Calcutta 400TE, but I'd strongly recommend looking at it's bigger brother, the 700 TE.

I would prefer a reel with a levelwind if it will hold up. I have heard good and bad about all three reels. I would say right now toro , 400 te and then saltist levelwind I am now considering. Didn't know saltist had some occasional trouble with jerkbaits

Thanks Schlagel the 700TE is a reel I have not used but on paper it looks good, this reel has a levelwind, 31inches of line pickup, and has 4.7:1 gears, it is a big reel and weights in at 19oz but looks like it would be a great DC10-13 REEL. The TORO WINCH with it being low profile and only 10.5oz, I like alot, and now have 4 TORO reels.

The only trouble i've had with my saltist is the clutch lever breaking. It happened after 3 months of hard use. I think you just need to learn how to engage and disengage smoothly and it will last a while. By the way, daiwa fixed it for free. Got a new toro this year. Not the winch. Planning on using it for smaller baits.

I use the Toros for everything except burning double 10's and up. Great for mag dawgs, pounders and anything else you want.
