| Backing boat up yesterday broke off lower 4 inches of my skeg. Any ideas of advise on how to fix this |

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | Take it to a prop repair place or your dealer. Could also check with any weld shop in your area as long as they are familiar with welding cast aluminum (this is not always easy) Where are you located? |

| Matt,
I have a buddy that used to run a big I/O boat and we broke a skeg off on the river one night. He owns a body shop and has aluminum welding equipment. Actually was not terribly hard repair for him to do. He simply cut out a plate of aluminum to the rough shape, beveled the edges, welded it on and then shaped the whole thing with a big body sanding tool. I mostly stood around holding tools for him, but I think we had it fixed up and looking darn near like new in about 1 1/2 hours. This was a big heavy 27' boat with twin 350 IO's and he never had any problems with that repair. I suspect a shop will charge you some bucks for that repair, but it should be able to be done. Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | It would be smart to have someone knowlegable look at the steering tube and motor mounts too. They are not protected during a rearward moving collision. |

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | I would personaly stay away from the www.alumaloy.com product. Im sure it works just fine for people who don't weld I just know from experiance working at a prop shop that the aluminum brazing products make a welders job alot more difficult. The stuff does not weld at all. So if you fix it with this brazing rod and have to repair it in the future you will have to either use the same product or grind out all the brazing rod and weld it. Welding it is the right way to fix it! Just my $.02 |
