Hello Folks,

I have been scouring the web looking for a boat (glass) that I can get into for a reasonable price and that i won't need to buy a 3/4 ton truck to pull it with. In my searching i came across an '01 Ranger 617vs Fisherman. I have never seen this boat in person but it looks similar to the 619 layout except obviously smaller. Ideally i would like to land myself in an 18' so I tried finding a 618 vs Fisherman with the same floor plan as the 617/19 and its a completely different layout. The 617 was a dual counsel, which may have been the difference, but I can not find a 618 with the dual counsel. I guess I am looking for input on the models and would like to know if I am searching for a diamond in the rough? I am looking for a deep vee hull and it just seems the dual counsel setup looks deeper although i would imagine its built on the same hull.

Any help is appreciated.

Mike

618vs is an altogether different animal than the limited year-offered 617 that was modeled in the 619 and 620 family of deep-v boats. you won't find a 618 in a dual console because it never existed. if you want a smaller boat and a dual console and it has to be a Ranger then you'll find yourself looking at their bass-style boats.

my suggestion would be to search for a 692 in the mid-late 90's vintage. they are harder to come by and when you see one you need to act fast.

another suggestion is the '98 Champion Fish-Hunter ... they built a really nice 18' boat on a deep-v hull, but i think it may have only been offered in a single console too. i think that boat was only marketed for a couple 2-3 years.

I have had a 617 for a few years now and it has been great for me. It is a duel console version. They are not easy to find and the engines you find on them will vary widely. Mine has a Mercury Optimax 150. I think you will want at least a 135 as this is a heavy boat. Eeasy to tow and fits no problem in my garage.

It is a shorted version of the 619 & 620 that was replaced by the reata and angler.

I have been very happy with mine, but I generally only fish with 2 in the boat or 3 max. No problem towing my kids around either.

The 690 and 692 are very good models also to check out based on your needs.

Let me know if you have anything I can help with.

Jonny,

Thanks for the input... by no means does my future boat need to be a ranger. I was intrigued buy the deep vee 617 as I typically fish inland water, Lk Tom and area lakes as well as Green Bay and Winnebago... my thing is there is a 170 miles between the two and i'm not looking to tow a 3500# rig all over the state. While 617 is a bit shorter than i would like but would hopefully weigh less. Thanks for the input.

617 Boat - 1585 Lbs for dual console
150 Opti 400 Lbs
8 HP Kicker 105 lbs

This is before 3 batteries, gas for 32 gallons and other gear along with the weight of the trailer itself.

I would say it it is under 3000 only because my trailer came without brakes, and in MN, they are required over 3000 to my knowledge.

Triton also made a 17' boat that had a similar dual console layout as the 617vs.

A 617 dual is actually heavier than a 690 single. (at least if bassboatcentral.com is right)

Last year, I bought a 2003 189 dc Triton and I am pretty happy with it. I fish some of the small lakes down here in Iowa and am on Leech two or three weeks a year. It'll handle about any wave actions you want to throw at it. It weights about 3400 - 3500 lbs (depending on gear & with no people), has a tandem axle trailer and pulls great behind my half-ton ford. If you can find one in decent shape for a decent price, I would recommend stopping and taking a look at one.

It might be a little out your weight range but if you want a dual console fiberglass boat in the 18' range with maxed out hp motor - then you are going to be pulling around a heavier boat.
