Posts: 87 | Hi - My wife and I will be spending some time in Adams over the next few weeks. I would like to take her out on Petenwell and pitch some heavy metal for musky. I am not real familiar with the area and not at all familiar with the lake. I will spend time reviewing prior posts in an attempt to familiarize myself with this body of water, but was wondering if anyone is willing to recommend a launch and mark up a map for me. I am happy to do whatever I can to repay the favor. Perhaps I will share the best action lake in Hayward, WI. Obviously not looking for your secrets, just something to give us a fighting chance. Best, David

Posts: 28 | The chester creek launch is nice. You may want to pick a few launchs to use depending on where you are fishing. It's a big piece of water with a lot of boating hazards, so I think it makes sense to trailer to another section of the lake, you can spend/waste a lot of time going slow from spot to spot. I would plan on not seeing much for follows, due to the dark water, and big algae blooms. It is a neat place to fish, just a ton of water and you have to pay a lot of attention if you want to take your lower unit home with you. I was there for the first time in June, just took my time moving around, bumped a few stumps going slowly, and the only damage was a broken bracket for the speed wheel for the graph. I only fished the north end/river areas, stayed off the main lake. pmv

Posts: 268 | right now the river is up from all the rain, it is going down slowly, spent last weekend in the chester creek and devils elbow areas because of the high water and screaming current. when the water goes back down to normal, try the mouth of the major creeks entering the river. IE 10 mile, 14 mile, skibbas slough also trailer down to Barnums bay and try there along the shoreline cover , wind permitting. Bucktails and spinnerbaits in hot colors also don't forget topwaters arond the stump fields and weedbeds and also try the upstream and downstream ends of islands. but mostly concetrate on wood and weed cover. You can always give Todd Forcier a jingle check out his website, he guides on the PETE. ![]()

Posts: 87 | Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and advice. My wife and I went out on Saturday. As mentioned, it was our first time on the Petenwell Flowage. We launched at the Chester Creek landing. Nice landing, kind of steep, by we didn't have any trouble. We had a map, but no GPS. We took our time and made our way to Devil's Elbow. Fished all over with nothing to show for it. We were targeting Musky. We also went up the river and tried a few spots, nothing. We threw everything, bucktails, glide-baits, topwater. We had fun and it was just nice spending the day together. Oh...and we didn't hit anything with the boat. Our primary goal. We will definitely get back out there. Not sure I would target Muskies until the fall unless I had a few tried and true spots that I knew might produce.
