My dad and I just got back from the Flowage after a week of musky fishing and we
never saw a Musky. Plenty of Northern though. I primarily used a lighter colored Suick and my dad slow surface baits like the Hog Wobbler. We are going back up in Mid August and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on which baits to use.
We have not had very good luck the last few years up there and I feel we need to make some changes. Let me know if you have any advice.

When I was up there years ago my best lure was a sucker colored suick. Also did good on big game twitch baits. My advice would be try some different spots. Pick up a fishing hot spots map of the flowage, it gives away plenty of good areas.

Can be a tough lake to fish, at least it was for me. I've had action on chartreuse Suicks and Smity baits, and green bladed cowgirls, and Chopper/prop topwaters.

Hey Dan,

Just got back from the Chip a week ago. I caught only one fish (fat 35") all week so don't feel too bad. My fish came on a chartruese 10" unweighted suick. I also had another rip on that bait a couple days later that I didn't get hooks into. Both came off the same piece of structure in Moore's bay, probably the darkest water on the lake. Had no action on that bait anywhere else. Kind of wish I had tried some other colors in the less stained areas of the lake, but who knows.

The only other action I had was a hot follow on white holographic 208 Crane. Looking back I wish I had bought a couple other color Cranes or Big Games to try out instead of white. That's what I had in my box so I used it.

We booked a morning with Tanner Wildes and he had us throwing green bladed bucktails so I would give that a shot also.

One of my buddies caught a nice fat 45" fish the last night we were there. There was a bad storm moving in with lighting flashing in the distance and he caught that fish on a firetiger Salmo Turbo Jack topwater. It is a really big profile prop bait. I've heard complaints about the prop bending from repeated casts, but it worked great for my buddy - by far his personal best. That fish came off a piece of structure that Tanner showed us, so you may want to see if he is available for a trip - might get you on a couple spots that don't get pounded all day, every day like Pete's bar.

Literally EVERY fish we saw out of our whole group, both pike and 'skis, came off mid lake weed beds, whether related to mid lake islands or weedy humps. Hope that helps.

You can't go wrong with green blades and black skirts on either a bucktail or a spinnerbait. I have also had success with black bucktails with copper blades during low light. Don't be afraid to use a spinnerbait and throw into the middle of the weedbeds and slop. There are big fish in there. Hope this helps a little.

I`ve heard green works good but black is the best

I will be back up there the weekend of August 14th. We fish primarily in the Chief River, Moss Creek, Cavanaugh Bay area. Though the Moss Creek area has become a Tropical Rain Forest of weeds. Thanks for the advice everyone. Our second trip is usually October but we are trying something new this year. If anyone else has any ideas let me know.

I agree with above, try throwing a green blade with black tail if you are going to use bucktails. Seems to work on the flowage.

Hi Dan

As that is the weekend I go on vacation on the Chip, please note that the PMTT has an event going on the weekend of August 14th.

Yes, a original ghosttail with a green blade and black hair tail seems to be the ticket for many people. It would not hurt to have an orange blade with a black tail either.

I may be going the weekend before now. I did not realize a tournament was going on.
