Posts: 33 | Alright so we tried leech in June, had some great success on the walters, not so much on skis. This weekend we want to try Mille Lacs. I woudl like to go to little pine and west battle, but timedoes not permit. Dont ask me why I am choosing 2 of the biggest lakes in Minn, but I guess their name sticks out. Plus mile lacs supposed to ahve great smallies too. I like smallies, they fun. My buddy is still trying to catch first ski, i have laid off the skis and more interersted in the walters right now. I will do both though. God knows i have enough tackle. We will be coming from northern illinois, so I am thinkign that the south end of the lake is most convenient. Opinions may vary, but where is the best fishing on the lake? We found one pod of fish on one spot on leech and fished it most of the weekend. Saw 3% of leech in three days, but caught 20 walters over 20" = fun. Where is the best location for lodging on Mille lacs. We will be out on the water all day, so just need a quick shower, maybe some chow and a little shut eye. Bait, ice are also critical. have a 17 foot crestliner, so am a little concerned about high wave potential, but Mille lacs is the best close option for us. Short notice i know, but just found out the girl is gonna be gone this weekend, so gotta plan fast! Thanks in advance, Ryan

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | If you are going to the south end, Kathio(sp) state park is a nice campgroud which is only a few miles from the access at Eddies, which is also another place to lodge. The launch fee is $10 at Eddies per day, but like the other private landings around the lake, is sheltered and well maintained. There are other places, but those are the two I am most familiar with.

Posts: 33 | I am thinking of focusing on the northwest portion. I really want to try my luck in one section of the lake to conserve fuel, time and learning curve. I think I will also rule out camping as it willcost too much time in setup, take down, food prep and everything else. I want to maximize time on water to locate the fish. Does anybody know what ever happened to the Soo Line Trail Motel and RV park on the SW part of the lake near Onamia? I've stayed there in the past and it's very affordable. Either they changed there phone number or went out of business. Thanks.

Posts: 3156 | are you looking to go on the cheap???? alot of the resorts rent ice fish houses durring the summer,,and these are not small,,bunks etc,,pretty reasonable with good access to lake and usually a place to plug in batterys,,some have AC or bring a small one with,,,after casting big baits all day you pass out anyways in 5 minutes if its a fish house or the best hotel

That sounds a little extreme. Might dry the red door hotel in the northwest portion. Just need a place with quick access to the water, bait, ice and food nearby. Is it best to hit the skis at night, or hit the rock reefs if the wind is pounding them during the day?

Posts: 470 Location: Blaine, MN | red door would be a good place to lodge, they offer hotel rooms that are reasonable as well as cabins... if you need a push in a general direction for that end of the lake fish wise, shoot me a PM.
