Nobody has talked much about Cass Lake this year. Anybody know what's going on up there? We usually take a trip from Chicago in July, but we are going to camp for a week in August. I'm getting excited!

CJ,

Spent last weekend on Cass and the pike are crazy as usual. Cabbage is up nice in places and a few fish in the 40's reported at Break on the lake resort. I suspect the open water bite is very good but we didn't get enough time to try it. By August they should be on the edges and very near the reeds at dawn and dusk. Cass is also up for NEW regulations on a slot for Northerns!!

Good Luck!

Steve,
Thanks for the reply. When you mentioned that the fish will be near the edges in August, do you mean the weed edges, or the edges off the deep breaks? Typically fishing in July, we work the edges of any cabbage and just off the deep breaks off the bars in the main lake. Other than the reeds, are there any other areas we should focus on?

Jason,

I think the new pike regulations on Cass are just being talked about. They're going to be putting experiemental regulations on a number of lakes in the state that they feel offer good trophy potential. I'm not sure what thye're thinking of doing on Cass, but one example of something they might do is put a slot of all pike from 26" to 36" must be immediately released with only one over 40" allowed.

Edges...Any edge you can find...break...weed etc..

Jason-

AWH you are correct! It's just being talked about and the DNR is looking for angler feedback.

Heading up early next week I'll update again.

We were out on the leadside of that front and got a mid forty with action from several smaller fish. We worked small weed areas off bars on the big lake. We had no action on the rocks either, but we did the week before.

Out last week and worked weeds, rock, & reeds. Worked about 40hrs and found only two fish on weeds. One 50" class and one in the 40". It was tuff! But action on Cass can change in a minute and be gone in a second. Good Luck!
PS-I think commance jim has been out all this week, maybe he'll let us know.
