So Steve W, what's the report on the Akeena now that (I assume) you've used it a bit. Will it hold up for standard baits? Have you tried it on heavier stuff? Thanks

Yes to both, very solid and smooth. Great reel.

one thing to be careful of, i bought one of these this part spring and mounted on a Black River rod. The reel seats seem short and i could NOT tighten it down on the rod without wrapping electrical tape.

I've been using one for about a month and as such can't attest to the long-tern durability of the reel but my initial impression is positive. It's perhaps not as smooth as the Induron, but at it's price point it's as smooth or smoother than any competition I've used. The drag is good; quite smooth and generous with adjustment. I believe it's got the best double-paddle handle in the industry. If I need another reel, I'd not hesitate to pick one up. I generally haven't used it on really heavy baits, so I can't effectively comment on that.

jackson,
I have an Akena on a Fenwick, another on an Okuma telescoping, one on an Okuma one piece rod, and one on a Tooth Tamer 7'6" (I'm fussy about rod/handle/action attributes for specific techniques) and all hold the reel tight, no issues.

I may have to switch it from my Black river then. The reel wobbled on a heavy retrieve, and noticed that the reel seet is on the reel was a little shorter than that on my Cardiff's.

Thanks for the report Steve. Do you hear of any plans to offer it in a lower gear ratio at all?

As a follow up, is there a power handle they make that fits this, and just out of curiosity why did you go with the 350 vs the 400 (at least I think that's the way you went). Thanks

I like the 250 size, just fits me nicely. I have a couple Red Isis for the BIG stuff.
