| alight im new to muskie fishing and espically new to trolling. i live in windsor and troll lake st clair, ive been trolling for skies about 5 times now and i keep getting skunked. im wondering if anyone has any advice on places to troll or lures to use, structure to look for, depth of water, weather conditions, speed, or any other advice would be great. |

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Well, since you are from Windsor, you are already a step ahead of the game, as you have a Canadian liscence. Try the Belle River Hump, and in front of the Thames. Watch your temps on the Thames, though as I've heard some low-mid 80's water temps. The deepest water available by either location will be the ticket. Try some jointed Wiley's, Lokes, Slashers, and even some double 10 bucktails trolled with weights. Try to run a spread of lures with some running in the top 1/3 and some in the middle 1/3 of the water column. The muskies in St.Clair are wanderers. There isn't a whole lot of pronounced structure when you are trolling. You put the miles on, you will put the fish in the boat. Some 20 fish days are not uncommon. |

Location: Michigan | I would consider joining Muskies Canada, MOMC, or Muskies Inc. to network and interact with people who have been fishing that lake for years. St. Clair is not like many other "muskie lakes", so traditional thinking does not apply. Most of the season, the main lake is not about fishing "structure" as much as it is finding suspended bait. Be ready to log some hours if you are going to learn it on your own. It is big water...
The fish have seasonal movements, and move with the bait inside of those. They can occupy an area for weeks, then move in a day... Try running 3.8-4.2 mph pulling aforementioned baits 20-40' behind boards. Boat rods, down rods, and prop rods can be good too.
As mentioned, you would save yourself years if you hire a guide. If you want to do the big boat thing, there are a number of incredible guides on LSC who catch hundreds of fish each season. They network and follow the active fish. If you want to fish in a smaller boat there are a couple guides who offer that as well.
