its not required to get into canada but required to get back into the states

Yes it is required - the Canadian officials won't let you into their country without one because they don't want you stuck in their country since you need one to reenter the US.

Yes, I second that in needing one. Both the Canadiens and US asked for my passport last week when I entered Canada and reentered the US!
