is there a way to easily repair a cracked guide (insert) without having to take it completely off? the guide in question is in the middle of the rod, so can't be easily swapped like a tip-top would be.

Have someone that knows how to replace the guide. Its normally under $20. I never heard of someone replacing just the insert before.

I have replaced an intact guide by heating up the ring, reinserting the guide, then running tip top glue around the metal part to seal it up. Not sure if you can buy the ring by itself though...

You can't buy just the inserts. You're going to need to replace the whole guide. A competent rod builder can do it for around $10-15 depending on what kind of guide it is.
