Any preference here? I'm assuming the external would get better reception, no?

There's pros and cons. For HDS for example, you have the option of an external or internal antenna. The external has a faster refresh rate, but doesn't read any better or closer. The external antenna allows you to mount it in clear view of the sky, if for example you wanted to mount the head unit in a cabin or under a dashboard or something. External antennas also allow you to buy a new antenna if it fails, where with an internal, if it fails it fails. But be aware that (for Lowrance at least) if you've got an external antenna, unless you put it on a switch or unplug it, it's ALWAYS drawing power from the battery, even if the unit is off. Just something to be mindful of. I run the internal antenna on my HDS 8 now with no problems. But if that antenna ever fails, I can mount the 4000 and be right back in business. I run an external on my 27C because there is no internal antenna option for that unit. Both work fine for me.

Love my 522 iGPS Lowrance. Never had any problems with it. The older models from 2008 back had problems with the internal GPS but they fixed it and they work well now IMO.

PS-I also made a speed bag for mine and now use it on ice fishing trips and fly ins to Canada. Versatile unit.

PSS-I have heard though their customer service has went down hill a little since last year. They fired a long term employee and she was the heart of customer service for Lowrance. I have never had to use customer service with them but again, since she was let go I have heard customer service is a little more challenging with Lowrance.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up getting the Humminbird 788c. As it was, Gander Mountian didn't have the 788ci in stock. Needed to get it today. They have a coupon for today and tomorrow, 20% anything you can fit in a cooler (that you also have to buy). Guy said I found a loophole because normally sonars are excluded.
I got the fishfinder for $520.00. I knew I'd never be able to find it cheaper.
