Posts: 642 Location: Richfield, MN | I am looking at hitting the lakes this summer for the first time in search of the true monsters of the lakes. (muskies)., Being new and just getting a start on buying some equipment as I have none at all I am wondering what are some of the lures I should pick up and start out with. If anyone could give me ideas on some lure types to get I would greatly appreciate it. I am not rich and I see the cost of lures is out of this world so I need to get a few and need to know the must haves. As times goes on I will get more especially during the off season. SO let me know what are the must have to get started. Thanks Mike

Posts: 208 Location: musky waters , WI | get a couple varietys of bucktails as it be the ones with marobou , flashobou bucktail , or rubber tails and a couple topwaters prop style , creeper style or wtd style. A couple crank baits to cover diffrent depths and a couple jerk/glide baits and you should have a good variety to start with and build you selection as you go. The baits you choose also varies in price so get what you can afford. Hope this helps

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | 5 lures I can't live without. Sennett tackles large pacemaker mag bulldawg dbl bucktails (I'm really starting to like dbl 9's) llungen lures krisco a phantom soft tail glider or a weighted suick as a throwback lure. This is just what I mostly use. The options are endless and every lure out there will eventually catch a fish. This is just what works best for me.

Posts: 642 Location: Richfield, MN | bassin and musky thanks for the inside scoop for what you think would be a great start. Going to doing alot of research on this site and other info I can find on the net. Does anyone know of any good websites that have REALLY great prices on lures. I found 1 site that offers custom lures and also have a weekly sale on certain items. Going to look at what you guys have said so far and see what kinda prices I am looking at. I hear and read alot about Double Cowgirls. What is everyones feelings about this lure. From what I have read these seem like a must have bait as well. THanks again and please keep the ideas coming!!! Mike

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | I would get rod that's at least an 8'6" rod that is heavy or extra heavy. As for cheap lures watch the buy/sell board here or if you want new lures try muskytackleonline.com. While your there do yourself a favor and get stealth flourocarbon leaders. The double cowgirls are pretty much a mainstay. Someone is always throwing one in my boat. There are quite a few companies that make them. Musky mayhem makes some sweet colors. I also like the llungen dc9's and dc'10. Your can still bulge the surface with a 9 blade and it seems to come In a little faster with a little less pull.

Posts: 682 Location: Sycamore, IL | Here is what I would suggest: 1. Black/nickel DBL 10 2. 8" cash weagle 3. 9" perch or sucker suick 4. 10" perch jointed beliver 5. chrome rapala super shad rap also...get a good flourocarbon leader from stealth tackle. plus...don't forget to get a good net and pliers/ hook cutters...good luck! Muddy, Good place to shop for lures on-line: Jackson Lures, Ltd. Go to website. Good prices; fast delivery. If I were buying only one rod and reel and were economy minded, I would get a Gander Mountain Muskie IM8 for lines 15 to 30 lbs.; and a Shimano Corvalus reel. If spending more, I might go with the Abu Garcia Record 60 reel. to start, I wouldn't buy more than this. You cannot throw Cowgirls and Mag Dawgs with this outfit, but starting out, you want to catch numbers of fish before you go for the all tackle record. Lures? concentrate on bucktails and crankbaits to start. You can add a rod for jerkbaits later. Bucktails, I like the Mepps Magnum Muskie Killer and Mepps Giant Killer. there are lots of good tails. Look around. I would go with silver and gold blades and natural (black, brown, and yellow) hair. Fire away. Crankbaits? Believers in 6, 7, and 8 inches; Depthraiders in 6 and 8 inces; Grandmas in 7.5 inces; and Wileys in 5.5 and 6.5 inces. (The Wileys are expensive, but worth it.) This covers shallow to deep. I'd also get one Topraider for calm surfaces. Colors? Try and match the forage fish. What are the muskies feeding on. for clear water, natural finishes. For dark water, brighten up. Good Luck.

Posts: 642 Location: Richfield, MN | Just a word of thanks to all that have feed me some good ideas on baits. Being new to muskie fishing I see that this website by far is the best when it comes to fishermen helping fishermen!!! I really appreciate. Keep the info flowing. I got some great advice as well via PM's and emails a special thanks to those great people as well. I have decided that I have to have 2 rod and reel sets as I for sure need to throw Double Cowgirls and Bulldawgs. So from what I can tell I need to get I would assume a extra heavy rod and a better baitcaster for these baits. I am right on the rod style!!! So now I will need to figure out 2 setups along with all the bait ideas you guys have been giving me. THanks Mike
