Posts: 1516 | I spooled up a new reel yesterday and didn't use backing could I have a problem with line sliping on the spool? How can it slip with 150 to 175 yards of line on it?

Posts: 157 | What I always did when I used to tie my braid to my spool directly was to place a strip of black electrical tape all the way around the inside of the spool directly onto the metal. It gives the line something to bite into more than the metal and it helps hold it solid. I'd also look at placing backing on just to spread some cost over multiple reels.

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | Pepper - 7/7/2010 1:40 PM How can it slip with 150 to 175 yards of line on it? Braind slippery than heck, that's why. I knew a guy that said braid was crap. I asked in what way? He said it slips on the spool. I asked did you put backing down 1st? He said What?? Then said, I just threw out a bunch of expensive good line. If I was you, I'd peel the line off and lay some electrical tape down, no need to remove the knot from the arbor, and respool the line back on. DONE!. Then GO FISH!!!

What do you use for backing? I put tape on mine to keep it from slipping but I don't really need 150 yards of line on my spool. i like the idea of spreading the lin out for other reels.

Posts: 1749 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | i use about 30 ft. of 25 lb. mono backing and spool up the rest of the way with braid. When you break off, add more backing behind and you are good to go. The fewer times you cut line from a spool, the less line you waste. For example, when you get down to a cast's worth of line on your reel, that line is thrown away. 100 ft on one reel, 100 feet on another reel.......all adds up to quite a bit of wasted line.

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | Guest - 7/7/2010 4:37 PM What do you use for backing? Mono or dacron. They both work. I use a uni to uni knot and I use to split a 3oo yard spool for two reel and after a season flip that line for another season (or more as it depends how much I use that reel). Don't know how much backing to use with 150 yards of braid? Put the braid on, tie your knot to the backing, fill up the spool. Then flip the line placing the backing onto the arbor and you are good to go.

You need backing, I had one slip out of the tape and the line actually spins. I set the hook on a fish, the line slipped wrapped around the tip of the rod and I was bouncing the boat off stumps with the trolling motor at kinkaid trying to get slack in the line...finally the fish got off...BR

Posts: 1185 Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | I am a electric tape and no backing guy. Just put down 2 layers of tape. Stick it down and wind it on. Your line will absolutely not slip. Make sure you put some tension on your line when you wind it on. I like to use a leather glove and snake the line between my fingers or have someone help with gloves on and holding the spool on a dowel.

I use backing and tape. At years end I take an empty reel and put backing on it and tie to line on the other reel. I then spool the line on to the new reel to get more use out of the line. We seldom get to the inner part of the line on a spool. Its very good so I turn it around and have as good as new line. Stuff too expensive to toss out.

Posts: 1270 | Be carefull with dacron as I have seen it slip also. I just use whatever mono I have lieing around. If you didn't use any backing it will slip gaurenteed! Maybe not today or tomarrow but eventually it will slip, most likely when you have the fish of a lifetime on!

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | Most of my reels have that little nub on the spool for the line to tie onto. With that I have yet to have any slip.

Also if you have a hole THROUGH the arbor and you thread the line through there and then tie your knot, you are good to go.

I've drilled a small hole at an angle through the arbor of my spools and tie a knot through it when re-spooling Spiderwire or Fireline. Without tying to the spool or using some mono for backing once it's been wet a few times it will be slipping. Then you'll wonder, "what's wrong with my drag?".
