I have a '95 690 vs with the single axle Ranger trailer that has the actuator for trailer brakes on it. We bled the system, filled with fluid, bought the lockout device for backing up, and they worked great all last year. This year we just started using again and they don't seem to be working. I have yet to have to put in the lockout and still been able to back uphill no problem, plus it just feels like they're not contributing. What is the first suspect I look at? Could it be the shock absorber? But if that was bad how would it not be still pushing the piston to send fluid to the brakes? One thing I noticed is that when I removed the fluid coupling from further back on the trailer it came off a lot easier than it ever used to, like there was no pressure built up. Any ideas? Thank you.

Sounds like air in the system to me. Bleed it thoroughly and try them again before anything.
