I fished Minnetonka yesterday for Minnesota's musky opener.  This was the first time I specifically fished this lake while targeting musky.  For those of you who have fished it and those who haven't, it gets fairly weed choked pretty early in the season.  With unusually warmer than normal water temps, a lot of the bays we fished were already full of Milfoil and a couple varieties of cabbage.

How do you handle figure-8'ing your bait in a lake with weed growth?

Let's say the weeds are just a matter of a few inches from the surface of the water.  Perhaps you're throwing a lure like a TopRaider... or maybe a glidebait like a Musky Appealer or Phantom.  Once I got the lure back to the boat, I struggled with doing a nice, wide figure-8 and then trying NOT to get the lure fouled in the weeds... while at the same time keeping the lure action consistent before going into the 8.

Guess I need some practice in this situation.

If using a topwater, I would just do a circle or L-turn on the surface.
