Subject: '85 Evinrude problem

so i was out musky huntin the N. Wisconsin opener on saturday and when i first got out on the water it took me 15-20 minutes to get my engine started. sometimes when i turned the key it would at least try to start. sometimes it wouldnt. well i finally got it started and it was running just fine untill about noon. i was driving to my next spot and it just started to slow down on its own and it quit on me and i couldn't get it started again. had to use the trolling motor to get back to the boat launch. luckily i was on a small lake! its a 1985 50hp evinrude. any ideas what the problem could be? thanks for any help!

Hiya,

Could be a few things... All of it will depend on whether or not it a fuel related or electric related.

My "hunch" is you have a fuel/spark issue.

First thing I would do is pull the plugs. If they are wet, I would suspect that the plugs either fouled or just need replacement. Heck...I would just replace the plugs anyway. The plugs are inexpensive and it would eliminate them as a cause.

I would also take a look at replacing the fuel filter on the engine as well. If that has not been changed, it could very well have just enough build-up on it that fuel flow is not taking place.

If this gets your engine going, I would highly suggest getting a can of mercury powertune or equivalent OMC/Bombardier product and do a deep clean through the carb throat. Basically what you do is get your engine warm and set it to high idle. Start spraying the product into the carb throat (alternating carbs) to where it starts to sputters and hopefully dies. when that occurs, continue spraying cleaner into each carb throat for a little while longer. Then let the engine sit for an hour. Finally, go out and run it at speed for a a while to clear out all possible gunk that has been cleaned out. There will be a bunch of white smoke, but that is the cleaner...it will go away fairly quickly.

I would start there...fairly cheap and is good maintenance for the engine and see where you are at. Last thing to consider would be the fuel line/bulb. If it is older and not flexible, it would be advisable to replace that as well.

As a last resort, I would check the timing of the engine. My 99 Johnson 50hp went out of timing to where it had trouble starting and staying running at idle. once I adjusted the timing back to 0 tdc, it started with barely a turn of the key and purred like a kitten.

Steve
