Posts: 20 | for all the owners of St.Croix big dawgs ( 8'6" xh) , what is the heaviest bait you have thrown on your big dawg rod ( i mean casting it as if you were trying to reach across the lake kind of cast !!! ) thanks

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | I personally would lob the pounders, for whipping something across the lake I'd say about 8 oz.

Posts: 692 Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | I have thrown 2 lbr's with it and recently, the GIANT phantoms which are listed as 16-18oz, but IMO are much heavier than a pounder - They are hell to cast, but they have awesome action and the 8'6" "BIG DAWG" rod handles them great.

Posts: 619 | it would have to be a slow fluid motion, if you try to snap cast something heavier w/ it, you will snap the rod

Posts: 540 Location: MN | From september-November 28 I threw 2pounders,mamouth sues,14" jakes and the big cobbs all with the big dawgs and could not have been happier. I think that the perfict setup for HUGE baits (aside from a custom thorne predator) is a big dawg with the handle extended 4" paired with a Trinidad 16n.

Posts: 402 Location: Eagle River, WI | We toss pounders all the time with them. I don't mean we lob the either. We throw them like we would any other bait.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Jsondag - 6/21/2010 8:38 PM Women lob cast - I big boy cast big baits all the time with it. no problems! Then call me a woman, lol. I haven't used a super heavy rod yet (nothing over a 16 oz rating), but it feels like a lot of stress on me and the rod to snap cast cast Pounders. I don't mind slowly bringing the bait back and then giving it a good heave though. Are you actually snap casting Pounders with the Big Dawg, or just giving it a good, big boy toss after slowly bringing the bait behind you? If those Big Dawgs can handle that they must really be tough! Might have to try to save up for one someday. curleytail Edited by curleytail 6/21/2010 8:44 PM

Posts: 238 | The heaviest baits i have thrown with mine is the pounder and mamoth sues and suzies, handles them great. Curleytail,i do give the baits a very stout forward rip or big boy toss but bring the bait back slowly behind me,sometimes even coming to almost a stop in motion before going forward.I have found that throwing the bait back hard behind you causes thumb to spool slipage sometimes and puts you out of position to make a good forward move.Imo.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Thanks Kawartha, sounds like you toss big baits like I do. Anything over about 8 ounces is too much for me to give a quick back cast stroke followed by the forward cast. I can't imagine what it would take to quickly bring a Pounder back and then snap it forward. Doesn't seem like rod or man could stand up to that for long! curleytail

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | Not to mention the rod's rated to 10oz. If your a Pro Staffer like Jerry and get discounts then feel free to snap cast. If you pay full price and plan on exceeding the lure rating I would lob anything over 10oz.
