Anyone ever update their Lowrance unit?

My Navionics lake chip won't work and i think its cuz i need to update my software on my 520.

How is this done? can a digital camera be used as the card reader or do i need to get a specific SD card reader to load the software from my PC to the card?

First off, what Navionics chip do you have? Is it a 2010?

yep the 2010 new chip (Premium edition), when i tried it this past weekend, it locked up my 520c and i had to reboot it. So it didn't work at all.

i don't know what version of software i have on my 520c but i was going to load the 2.5 if its not there and hopefully that will fix it.

Your correct, you need to update your unit with the 2.5 version. That update is suppose take care of your problem.

You can use your camera as a reader from what I've been told by a Lowrance rep.

Fantastic.. now the only problem is finding an SD card that is less than 1 gb. I am now hearing that the 520 can't read an SD card more than 1gb.

and thank you TJ.. i appreciate your help with this...

No, you can use larger cards on the 520 and other recent LCX units. The 334, LCX-18,19,20,21 and a few older units that are 7-9 years old, those units you don't want to use anything bigger than a 1 gig. I've used a 1,2, and 4 gig on my LCX-27, which is essentially the same unit as the 520, just larger.

I loaded the update on a 2 gig card and my 520 does nothing. Am i doing something wrong or is the card too big?

i tried it on a 512 mb card and it still does nothing.

Is the unit on when you put the chip in?

First thing is, turn the unit completely off. Put the chip or sd card in, power the unit. The update should automatically start and give you a progress bar of the status.

Also, are you positive you've got the update on the card?

Find somebody with a laptop and plug in the card and make sure it has the update.
Turn your unit off put card in turn unit on your unit will clearly show it is updateing.
when your unit say's it's done updateing pull card out and re-power up.

That was the biggest mistake I made to update my 520. Now it's totally useless. It's solid yellow most of the time and reading 1.5 ft of water. Flashes at about 8 ft and mostly yellow. shows very little bottom in deep water. just some black flecks. When you move even that's gone and then it goes back to all yellow and 1.5 ft of water. Besides that the gps never locked on for more than 5 minutes before it lost signal. I tried every different setting I could and nothing worked. And the scrolling speed would freeze up,go herky jerky ,then freeze up , go normal speed and then freeze again. I'm peeed.

Again i would find somebody with a laptop with a slot for the card.
Clean one (delete everything) of the cards and redownload from the lowrance site.
I would not delete anything from the download your asking for trouble then try updateing your unit again I would not use a camera as my reader.
Good Luck

Try a soft reset. To do this, power the unit off, press and hold the pages key, press and hold the power key. Release both keys when the USA map appears.

The soft reset won't affect any of your currently saved data, if you have any.
