Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | Sort of working on a project that concerns release tools and techniques that help safe release of muskies while shore fishing. What do you guys do that helps? Thanks! Doug Johnson Edited by dougj 5/7/2010 6:01 PM

| I used to fish quite a bit from shore. Most of the time I ended up getting in the water with the fish. That way I didn't have to drag it up on shore. Keep the jaw spreaders and long nose pliers in my pockets. Usually tried to carry a couple pair, dropping them in the water happens. I didn't have them at the time, but hook cutters are priceless. I am lucky I didn't get tied up with a fish when it wasn't in the net. Could have gotten ugly...... | |||

Posts: 93 Location: Minneapolis, MN | When possible I bring a full size muskie net. If fishing alone, I'll extend the handle and leave the hoop in the water (with the handle on shore). This way when I hook up its just a matter of directing the fish towards the hoop and lifting up. Then the fish can remain in the water while I get the release tools. (Keep your foot on the net handle.) Hip waders are helpful. Keep pliers and cutters handy. Just one way to do it without harming the fish. Edited by stinger 5/7/2010 6:48 PM

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | Pliers and cutters, jaw spreaders if you use them in the boat. Cutters are the most valuable. Had what could have been a phenomenal day ruined by getting a hook in the hand and a trip to the ER. Had I not had the cutters on hand I would have been in a world of hurt.

Posts: 16 Location: Stevens Point/Sheboygan Wisconsin | I fish from shore quite a bit and am always wearing chest waders. I get in the water and straddle the fish. I keep the tools in my "pouch" pocket on my chest so they are always with me right when I need them. If not wearing waders I would recommend a small backpack/pouch to hold all your tools so when you walk down the bank they will be with you.

Posts: 96 Location: Eau Claire | I spent most of my college days fishing from shore with pointer, after a couple of pairs of pliers ending up in the drink, I got a retracter that clipped on to my waders. No more lost tools!

Location: 31 | Hi Doug: To answer your question, I just use hookouts and a tooth prove glove. My equipment includes a five-gallon plastic bucket with a PVC pipe glued in the center, about 15 baits, extra leaders, hook-outs, and a tooth-proof glove. I never go in the water... at least on purpose anyway I use to do a fair amount of shore fishing around dams years ago and even broke out the "dam bucket" for the first time in a long time this past Saturday. It is probably a good idea to carry something that will cut hooks just in case, but I have never had an issue so far with probably a 100 or so muskies caught from shore. It is a riot... and good exercise too. It's always better to have picked out a release spot before you hook up. I've seen guys casting off of bridges and stuff... utterly ridiculous! I typically use flashy gliders retrieved with the current and a top water or buck tail in the slack water. Most of your action will be in the fast water and its literally toe to toe... GL!
