I am planning on heading up to one of the lakes around Madison next week. How crazy will it be on wed. morning. Never fished either. Any advice on which lake? Boat ramp's in good shape? Parking? Any info is appreciated.

Weds morning will be fine! If the weather is good you could have some good luck. We haven't had this warm of a spring in YEARS!!!! Weeds are WAY up on waubesa in some areas and muskies have been spotted by panfisherman on a lot of occasions. North and south end weeds are a good place to start. Get a map and look for typical "spring" spots. Wingra is a pretty consistant bet as well this time of year....larger fish in wauby though.

Not sure how the boat launch is on wingra this year..but the launches on wauby are fine. just trim up as you head out till you reach deeper water.

saw 5 ski's out cruisin Wed evening on waubesa, water temps were 58ish ....all were in the 38 to 40 range and had battle scars from spawning....if you go to waubesa and aren't sure where to fish, look for panfishermen...muskies will be in the neighborhood...
Wingra is a no brainer ...fish the weedlines, both inside and outside edges and you can't go wrong...you shouldn't have too many other fishermen out on a wed morning...good luck

The more I cross those state lines to fish the better

The launch at wingra isn't too bad, haven't been down there since about mid November last year, they may have added some blacktop to the end of the ramp, because last time i saw it there was about a .5 to 1 ft drop about 5 ft from the water. The other thing about the new launch at wingra is the curbs in the parking lot, they are about 1.5 to 2 feet high and just as deep, you will still be able to park your trailer but could take more finesse or gas then what it used to be. There is probably about 15-20 spots in the actual lot for boats but I have seen lots of creative parkers down there. Like Painter said wingra will most likely be pretty dead on wednesday, guess it depends on how many addicts took vacation or are unemployed and got nothing better to do than fish. I can't say anything about wauby, only fished it a couple times and never around opener.

Thanks for the replies. What boat launch is the best to use on Waubesa? Also, I read something about a lake access permit. Is this something I have to get beforehand? Or am I able to get this at the boat landing, early morning? Thanks again

All three launches are fine on Wauby. The Goodland launch doesn't have as much parking as the other two. You have to pay a fee on wauby and monona. Wingra is free. If you plan on fishing up here a lot you should get the permit for the whole year, otherwise you have to pay a daily launch fee, I think it was $7 last year.
