Headed up to a lake to fish walleyes and crappies like I do every opener with a couple good friends.. The lake also has some nice pike (along with some hammer handles) but usually dont target them.

The only thing that really changed from last year is I now have the musky bug worse than ever and all I really want to do is test out my new new musky lures and rods so when the northern musky opener is here.. I'm ready. So I've been battling the idea of of bringing up that tackle too?

Looking for advice or encourgment from someone who has tried to target all these fish in one small weekend before or flat out thinks its a bad Idea... It will be tight squeeze on the way up with that many rods in the car. Is bringing these extra rods and tackle worth it or is that flat out too much stuff????

P.S. there are No muskies in this lake so that is the only reason I'd think about testing out the big girl gear..

Bad idea! Pike fishing isn't easy when you are targeting bigger fish and big lures this time of year is about the worst way I can think of to do it. I used to fish pike in Canada this time of year and to find them and catch them you'd have to hunt them down. Most often in deeper water or near spawning walleye/suckers/perch. Dead bait is a very good option along with 4" spoons like Doctors and Daredevils along with 5" minnow baits like Rapalas and Rebels. It was nothing out of the ordinary to get them 20 to 50 feet deep this time of year.

If you are after walleyes and crappies you will have you hands full already. Adding pike to the mix is just asking to go bust.

Take the stuff along to try it if you have to, but don't delude yourself into thinking you are going to clean up on pike using it.

I'd bring the pike gear, Pike are easy to catch and it's simple to target Walleyes and pike at the same time.

It doesn't hurt to throw some 1 oz. Dardevles or Len Thompsons over new weeds for an hour or so. All you need is a rod for lines 8 to 20 lbs. A regular Mepps Musky Killer works on those rods.

How tight of a squeeze are we talking on space...? And exactly how much more gear are you wanting to bring? I think those are the two most pressing questions. If it were me, I'd just bring it... if you're already bringing everything AND the kitchen sink... what's another rod (or two) and another tackle box?

Better to have it and not need it... than to want it and not have it.

Thanks fellas. I ended up bringing the 3 extra rods and the big box even though it was a tight squeeze in the trail blazer. I know its not the right time of year to be throwing big baits but I had to try out the new 8 1/2ft black river xheavy rod with the new reel and and man do I love it. Kinda funny having my buddy casting an ultra light with a bobber and mini mite on one end of the boat. We ended up catching some average pike in the weeds and did have 2 real nice follow of a pike near 40''. 1st followed on a baby shallow raider and after that education was over with.. he followed up a spinner bait up to the figure eight and no dice.. Also caught our limit of walleye friday night and was off the water by 3am.

Lets face it.. this was just passing time. I'm really looking forward to Norther Wisco Opener!

P.S. I like what your saying PSYS. I'm glad I brought it.
