If I have a 24-volt system for my trolling motor, can I hook my navigational lights and sonar to the same 24 volt system? Or will that be too much power for the smaller accessories? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Joe

Hiya,

I believe so long as you only hook them to one battery, you should be safe..with emphasis on "should". If you hook across the two batteries, then you would have issues with too much voltage.

Safe bet....get a voltage tester and run it across one battery and see what voltage it puts out...

Thanks Steve. I was hoping it was as simple as that.

Uzi - I would not recommend putting your sonar on the trolling motor battery. I'm assuming your rig doesn't have a starting battery. If so I would get a smaller battery to run the sonar.

The problem with using the trolling motor battery is that your sonar may be sensitive to voltage drop or electrical interference. Voltage drop is one of those little electrical gremlin's that can drive you crazy.

f. ex. If you are fishing and hit full power on the TM, the sonar may shut off or lock up, and have to be reset. This would likely happen later in the day as the TM batteries are getting lower in available power.

There is also a very good chance of the TM causing electrical interference with your sonar. However, you could try it and see. If either happens, you need a separate battery for the sonar.

If you are going to try it, hook your sonar to battery number 2, the one with the negative lead running to the trolling motor.

Good luck,
Al

shows how well I read the question...I didn't even process the sonar part.

I would agree with not hooking to the TM batteries for the voltage drop/interference as well. navigation lights, though...I'd say have at it!!

Thanks for bringing that up Al (in a good way!!)

I don't know if it matters, but the sonar is actually just a vexilar. Do you think I could run into the same issues?

Thanks.

It's possible....

I used to run a vexilar with my two batteries in parallel for a 12 volt trolling motor and had no issues. Worst case is that you hook it up and get interference, but the older vexilars had an interference reduction system on them, which might work here if you get some signal loss. Can't hurt to try it...
