Posts: 132 Location: MN | I bought the Structure Scan unit tonight and read through the installation manual. Does anyone know out of the different mounting options, which is the best for best performance of the transducer? Jack plate, step mount, direct step mount, or transom? Putting it on jack plate or step protects it much better, but you won't get any readings unless you are not on plane. Thanks. | ||

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | I've not mounted mine yet. Hell, I haven't even hardly opened the box yet, other than to make sure everything was there. I know most of the bass guys mount them on their plates. I'd not worry about it on plane, as I think you're supposed to be less than 10 mph for optimum readings anyway; and if I'm not mistaken, closer to 2-6 mph...off plane. Not sure on those speeds, other than that's what I've gathered from the guys at BBC. And I know that some guys that have put them on the step have had issues with full coverage to the sides. I don't have a plate on my tug, so I'm thinking I'm going to do the bracket off the transom similar to my conventional transducer. Not ideal, but with no plate and not wanting to mess with the step/wedge set up, it's the best option for me. | ||

Posts: 2 | I just purchased the scan unit also. I noticed in the mounting instructions they said that the closer to the HDS transducer the better. I am not sure why. I also noticed that they refer to the yellow wire going to a switch. I emailed Lowrance about this and have yet to receive a reply. I don't understand what the switch is for? | ||

Posts: 307 | The reason for mounting it near your regular transducer is so that the down imaging and 2d sonar match up correctly. If you've got them within a couple feet I wouldn't worry about it. As far as not getting a read on plane with it's not going to work worth a crap. I like it up on my step anyway so it doesn't create drag or spray a rooster tail. This is to the best of my understanding, so I may be wrong, but you want them close to the 2D ducer so the Downscan will be "scanning" the same thing a the conventional ducer and the pictures will coincide; you want the data to overlay. As far as the yellow wire and the switch, it allows you to power the LSS independently of the head unit. Meaning, if you don't want the LSS on, you can either turn it off at the switch, or go into the menu and turn the LSS off; the switch being the easier of the two. You do have the option of omitting the yellow wire and powering solely through the head unit, but that either leaves it on when ever the head is on, or like I said, you going in and manually shutting it off. And on my HDS8 at least, the menus aren't the fastest scrolling things I've ever seen. I plan to put mine on a switch. I like to be able to "kill" my electronics when the boat is off the water in the garage for the night; as the pucks will still draw power, head units will still have power "sitting" at the plug without a switch and so on....power accellerates corrosion, etc.... | ||
