Subject: Thoughts on why no quality HS reel with thumbar/levelwind?

The Okuma thread got me wondering...why/what barrier is there that no company has produced a high quality high speed reel with a thumb bar and levelwind? I know the Saltist attempted at least the levelwind part but ended up being a less than stellar reel, but really thats it. Why wont someone attempt a reel that is as smooth and reliable as a Trinidad and add the functionality/ease of use that you get with a thumb bar and levelwind? Just curious, anyone in the industry thats in the know or has some insight on this subject would be interesting...

Let's assume money is no object, I would pay for a reel like this and I'm sure some others would too -

Until someone does I'm stickin with TE's with power handle's and doing the extra work...

Why? Because musky fishing is a very small market compared to the salt water market and salt water guys do not like thumbars.

Been asking the guys at Okuma the same question.

Hope they are listening! Bet sales would surprise them!

I agree. i won't buy a reel without a level wind or thumb bar. It can't be that difficult to produce.

Small niche industry yes, but every week someone asks the question - what's the best reel for...and since there is usually not a concrete one-reel-fits-all answer, you would think a pretty high percentage of folks would buy one if it was ever made.

Because the market is somewhat smaller that shouldn't stop, at least Shimano, from coming out with one. They make a specific Tekota that auto engages for Rollie and Hellens... The Trinidad already exists it just needs a couple mods. And I'm sure it would find a market elsewhere other then Muskies.

Putting an auto engage on a Tekota was a pretty simple modification, what you are proposing is a pretty big midification. Also sales of the big reels are drying up fast regardless of what everybody on here wants. I think people are begining to realize that it's just not much fun fishing for muskys with a reel made for tuna.

+1 to this.

After using my new Revo Toro... there's no way I'm buying any other massive reel. I've learned my lesson. We need power and the line retrieve... but we need to remain comfortable while casting for several hours at a time.

There's nothing uncomfortable about a Trinidad, they just need to add a thumb bar and levelwind and they'd have the perfect burner reel for musky fishing.

It's already 20oz. add a thumbbar and level wind and you are looking at 21-22oz! That's twice the weght of a standard reel. To each there own but that's not comfortable to me!

I don't get why guys: edit...complain.... about not having a thumb bar or levelwind...I've had a Trinidad 16N for 2 seasons and put hundreds of hours on the reel ....rarely get a back lash and it spools just fine...to me it casts like a dream and the lever switching becomes 2nd nature .... no real need for either imo....but that's just me... ;0

exactly, they're easy to use. i prefer the Trinidad 14 as it fits my small hands better than the 16n, but either way they cast and retrieve easily and haul ass without turning your wrist to mush.

when it comes to speed there's just no comparison between a smaller reel like the Toro Winch with 200yds of line and 4.6:1 ratio in contrast to a Trinidad with 250-300 yards of line and a 6.2:1 ratio. faster is faster, and the Trinidad gets you there while also making it easy on you.
using a higher-speed Toro might be okay for other baits (that's what i use Shimano Curados to do), but on hard-pulling baits like double-10s it just means you're going to kill your hands and wreck the reel.

if you want ease of retrieve, i'm sure the Winch is fine. personally, for that i'll just stick with the Shimano TE: it'll give you that cake-walk slow ratio retrieve and the sideplate has the name of a brand that you can trust.

What if I hold it for you lol. I've wanted to use that line since the burger king comercial first aired.

Why do you say the Saltist is a less than stellar reel? I bought the level wind 30 series and absolutely think its a great reel for big bucktails.

Because I hold the foregrip and use my thumb to control fish, not the drag. No question the Trinidad drag is great, but I just prefer being able to give a fish as much or as little pressure as I want, when I want. I sold my TN16 because I never was able to find a comfortable place to hit the freespool when a fish was on the line.

Plus, no levelwind is great for distance with heavier baits and throwing with the wind. Tossing a light bait into the wind however is another story.

I had a Saltist last year and I would recommend it to anyone. Also, the lack of a thumbar is no big deal at all. It takes about 30 min, if that, to get use to engaging the reel. Dont let this discourage you from getting a reel.

Saltist? Decent reel, but beware the spring on the spool release lever. Burns 'tails like they say it does though. You'll hear more positives than negatives.

Remember he said money is not an option. Maybe they should make it out of some kind of a space age alien metal or something to cut down on the weight.

I think the reason they don't make one is reel manufacturers think the market for such a reel is very small... just a guess ....

I'm sure in the grand scheme of manufacturing fishing equipment, muskie fishing probably isn't even on the radar.

It would seem that way at first thought, but there are musky specific baits and musky specific rods. I suppose it's a little different ballgame, but if manufacturers make musky specific rods, why couldn't that carry over to reels too?
