I just bought a larger boat and will be rigging it with a bow mount trolling motor with a 60" shaft. I think I probably need a Ram mount to hold the shaft while trailering. I really only trailer the boat about 1500 miles a year but I think that thing would be bouncing all over the place if not secured. . Due to the cover that is going to be put on the boat, I am trying to avoid the ram ball from having to be mounted on the gunnel and causing a problem with the new cover. Anyone know of a flush mount type securing for the trolling motor shaft? Thanks, Tom

I had the same problem a few years ago. Solution: quick detachable plate for the trollng motor that minnkota sells and put the motor in the bottom of the boat or the truck on long trips. For going on short trips to the local lakes, I cut a piece of 1" electrical pvc pipe that had the wider coupling end the length from the trolling motor shaft to the deck. I then sawed a notch in the coupling end that fit the shaft snug. I have a velcro strap that holds it from sliding down the shaft and a 1/4" pin with a latch that keeps it from coming out of the "fork". I glued one of those kids super balls that fit in the pipe, about halfway in, from the end that is on the deck, and that seems to hold it better on the deck, and not wear a groove in the carpet. Not real pretty, but functional.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have the plate arriving today.I will be taking the motor off when storing the boat outside for a few weeks each year. I really do not want to disconnect the trolling motor every time I trailer the boat though. Thanks

I purchased a mount that slides back (ebay) so the trolling motor doesn't stick out past the boat when not in use, I use a longer ram trolling motor mount to stop any bounce when trailering, works great, mounted it to inside surface of the gunnel so it is out of the way.

Do people use the RAM mount when motoring? Just wondering because I take my trolling motor off every time I trailer the boat with the cover on because my cover doesn't fit, but was thinking I may get a RAM mount for those really rough days.

Check into the mount that slides back, your cover might fit then so you don't have to remove the trolling motor.
If I'm going a long distance, I do secure the motor to the ram mount when motoring rough water.
