Posts: 3511 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hi everyone, Been toying with the idea of getting a couple of the vented-type fishing shirts by cabelas/columbia/bass pro etc that have the venting under arms and on the back... Anyone wear these and just how cool are they on those hot days? I usually wear tee shirts, but they shrink break down fairly quick... So.. looking to see if the fishing shirts are more durable, yet comfortable. More or less looking to go nylon or polyester with these rather than cotton, but would like to hear comments on any of the types out there. suggestions as well.. Thanks Steve Edited by VMS 3/13/2010 9:56 PM

Posts: 208 | Steve, you will love them but like anything else you get what you pay for. My favorite that i have found is from REI. There a little more spendy but nice stuff! You can get a nice short sleeve (REI Brand) like your talking about for around $45.00 and they are comfortable and last forever. I struggled finding nice outdoor clothing untill i discovered REI. You will pay more but you'll buy less!

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | They're all I wear. Litterally, I even wear them when I'm not fishing. I wore one last night to dinner with my fiance and her parents. They are worth every penny. The pants are great too. It's so nice to be able to get soaked by a fish, the dog, running the boat through 3' of chop and be dry in 20 minutes. Try that with jeans. The Bonehead shirt from Columbia is a heavier fabric and was the first generation of flats shirts. It's not a bad shirt, but you can still sweat in it, and being a heavier shirt, you'll get sweaty pits. It doesn't wick as well as the newer shirts. The Bahama from Columbia is a lighter but coarser fabric, which was their second attempt. I don't like the Velcro top pockets on them; they come open and sag down the front of the shirt too easily and it doesn't wear as well next to skin, which is the whole point of these shirts. Now they have the Tamiami shirt, and it's a winner. It's a great shirt in every way. Simms makes great shirts and pants, and they redid their line this year, so you can find a good number of them on sale right now. Sierratradingpost is usually good for Ex Officio on sale and currently a couple of Simms. The second generation Under Armour shirts are simply awesome, but at $75 I only buy them when they're on sale at Cabela's. They ususally come loaded with pockets, but don't fill them up. Putting crap in the pockets creates a hot spot that wont' breath, and these shirts fitting loose as they do, having a bunch of added weight on the front hangs them heavy around your neck. Keep your crap in the tackle box and not in your pockets. Edited by esoxfly 3/14/2010 11:09 AM

| I started wearing them for wade fishing small trout streams in Iowa because I could fit everything I needed in the pockets. I started with the Bass Pro brand and now wear the Columbia ones. I wear them 99% of the time while summer fishing. They are very comfortable, breathe well and dry fast. Like esoxfly, I now wear them for just about everything. I have been avoiding the Under Armour ones because of the price, but may have to get one now...... | |||

| I have two of what you describe from the Gander Mountain Guide Series. They are worth what they cost for summer fishing. Cool and dry quickly. Pockets that seal. I would buy long sleeves if you have any sunburn issues. The sleeves can be rolled up and kept up by a handy tab. | |||

Posts: 8865 | Second what most have said here. I war the safari shirts from Kayjet, a Canadian company. I have a few others as well. They are certainly more comfortable. And on super hot days, I like to take them off, dunk then on the lake, and put them back on. I prefer those with long sleeves as well. Another nice option is the ones with the velcro collar that you can flip up to cover the back of your neck when it starts to get burnt in the spring. One thing I would DEFINITELY make sure you have, no matter what brand you choose, is collars that button. The ones that don't button start to flap against your neck at around 30MPH, and by the time you get over 40 MPH they're buzzing away. Sounds silly, but after a few runs it starts to hurt, especially if you haven't shaved that day. Add in an early season sunburn, before "leatherneck" sets in and you'll wish you never wore the shirt.

Once in a while you see them for like $50. Get the second generation shirts. The first gen had issues, but you can't find them much anywhere anymore. The new ones (current ones) are my favorites of my flats shirts.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Most shops in the north don't carry the best stuff for those hot days, you need to travel south to really see what's out there. What I found a few years ago is that the newer flats long sleeve t-shirts are much better at keeping you covered and cool than the button up shirts. Check out the columbia blood and guts 1/4 zip LS- t's and the Skiff Guide LS t's. New this year are the Columbia Freezer LS t's that are are really awesome. (I have no affiliation with Columbia this is just my obsevation)
