Posts: 422 | Can any of you provide some insight on where and how you located the gps puck on a Crestliner Fishhawk with a consol. I have a new humminbird unit and my boat has never had a puck on it before. Pics would be great too. Thanks, Craig R.

Posts: 279 | I was always told you want the puck as close to the transducer as possible. That way when you mark a spot when you come back to hit the spot there is less margin of error.

I don't have a fishhawk, but do have a crestliner CMV, some of the interior on the two boats are similar. I mounted mine at the end of the "box" or side wall that is right behind the drivers side seat. It is built out for the throttle and shifter controls. It was handy, because the cable only had to be routed a few feet, and there is a small gap where this boxed out area meets the side of the boat, where I could squezze the cable through and avoid drilling any big holes in case I had to move it. Just driiled a couple small holes for the base of the puck and the cable is exposed for only 3-4 inchs going to the puck. Kind of a out of the way spot also. Anywhere there is a clear shot of the sky from all angles is good. People get way to hung up thinking that their gps is accurate to a 3' circle. Take a look at your "position error" sometime on the water, mine is usually around 18' at the least and I have seen it over 40' to 50' and more a lot of the time. It is constantly changing. Figure if you have a 18' boat and the puck is in the middle that is 9' to either transducer, front or back, doubtful that your position error is going to be less than that most of the time. If you want to mount it next to a transducer, I would do it in the front, as that is where I make the most waypoints, if I believed it mattered. PMV

Posts: 422 | PMV, Thanks for the info. You wouldn't have any pics would you? I don't think mine is built out for the throttle.

I'm kind of computer illiterate, it would be easier to take one with my phone and send it. Maybe when I said "behind the driver seat" isn't that accurate. It is along the right side, facing forward, about 3' behind the seat, but tight to the right side. It is built out about 3 to 4 inches to accomodate the throttle and shift lever, the top of this isn't much wider than the puck (lowrance) and is flush with the top of the boat. When they built the boat, they carried that panel back to the rear casting deck. I think on the fishhawk in the back corners there are some small rectangular build outs that are higher than the deck that would be a good spot. PMV

I took some pictures and could probably e-mail or may try to post them. Pulled the boat out today and washed and waxed it. Starting to get the itch. Won't be long to the walter run. PMV

Posts: 512 | I mounted mine in the front, next to the trolling motor... You can see it behind my nephew in this picture. Its a crestliner fishhawk as well.. Didnt want to put it on the rail because it would interfere with the cover.. seems to work o.k. Posts: 422 | Dave, Is that puck for your bow unit or consol unit. Mine would be for the consol. Also, what length shaft do you have on your MinnKota?

Posts: 335 Location: Minnesota | I have a 1750 fish hawk and I have the puck in the bow. I looked all over for a better place to mount it and everywhere I wanted to try, it was in the way of something. I thought about building a small lure storage box in place directly in front of the console tucked into the corner where there is some wasted space and putting it on top of that but I couldn't come up with a good plan so I just put it on the bow where it is out of the way and I could use it for both of my units. My waypoints are accurate enough for what I am using them for.

That puck is for the console unit, the bow is just a graph, I actually ran the wire for it in the channel on the sides.. and that minnkota has a 48 inch shaft on it... hope that helps, Dave Edited by Dave T. 3/8/2010 5:51 PM

Location: Hayward WI | I"ve got my Humminbird 997 on a Ram mount on the gunnel cap at the console of my 1850 FishHawk. There is a plate you can buy http://www.cabelas.com/p-0013692018192a.shtml that mounts the puck to the Ram mount which is what you see in the first pic. Or do like I did for the graph on my bow, went to the hardware store and bought a galvanized plate (for trusses??) with holes predrilled, cut it to fit and spray painted it black, cost about $3 I think. 4reuk- I can't get logged in and have not gotten a reponse from the webmaster yet. I think i can't pm unless I'm logged in, not sure on posting the pictures while not logged in either. Hesitant to post e-mail address. I'll keep trying to get those pictures to you. In that last post/picture- any problems with the cover attaching or rubbing bad on the cover? I have a ram mount at the consol, but the one with the arm that swings 360 degrees. I have it mounted lower than that top rail and I swing it in or out for travel/fishing. PMV

Location: Hayward WI | For traveling with the cover on, I take the unit off the mount and release the Ram from the ball that's mounted on the gunnel. The rest of the ram mount and puck I put on the shelf under the console.

Posts: 214 Location: Central Iowa | I had a crestliner fishhawk console with a lowrance 332 mounted on a ram attached to the gunnell right next to the console and then the puck was mounted on that plate shown in one of the pictures above, so it sat right behind the unit. I'm not sure if it was the proximity to the actual unit or the windshield but i experience periods of really bad reception with my antenna. I ended up moving the puck off of the bracket and located it all the way up front and the reception was never an issue again. I think they do recommend mounting the puck at least 3 feet from the sonar/gps unit.
