Posts: 233 Location: Iowa | Hopefully going to be get a hds 8 for the console and a hds 7 for the bow. I think I'm going to mount my 7 with a ram mount that I already have. My question is how do some of you have larger screen electronics mounted on your console? I like that big ram mount but I really don't feel like shelling out a hundred bucks for one. Anybody every use the johnny ray mount they have in cabela's or bass pro? Or anything else people are using? Thanks, Jeremy Edited by jwelch 3/14/2010 10:23 PM

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | Check Ebay. At one point in time, there was a guy selling the 2.5" RAM mounts for like $25. I bought two. HDS 8 needs a large mount if you're going to be in rough water. Attachments ---------------- PB300169.JPG (140KB - 140 downloads) PB300167.JPG (140KB - 139 downloads)

Posts: 54 | Jeremy, I have several of the big ram mounts with the 2" ball. Those are the ones you want for the bigger screen units. The ones I have are universal mounts. Just a round mount. Just like the one in the top picture. I made an aluminun plate and drilled and tapped it for my Lowrance units. I could send you some pics. I'd sell you the ram mount for $50 plus shipping. Posts: 233 Location: Iowa | cheap out??? Just trying to see what everybody is using. I just think the large ram mount is little overpriced. My buddy has one and yes it is pretty nice. If it comes down to it I will buy one. Just seeing if there were any alternatives out there. Jeremy

Enjoy the unit when you get one. IFS

Location: Contrarian Island | imo the Ram mounts are the only way to go...maybe a little over priced but they are rock solid ....you are spending 1000-2500 on a new HDS Unit imo 100 bucks to keep it in place isn't going it on the cheap...I have the big ram for a 8" lowrance...stays put. check ebay for the mounts...you might be able to find one on there or craigs list for less Edited by BNelson 3/19/2010 9:48 AM

Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | I have to say I was disappointed in the ram that I usd for my LCX26c. My unit would begin slipping the minute we hit even modrate waves. Forget about crossing someones wake or rough water. Both my bow and main unit are mourned directly to the deck or console. No problems since.

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | Were they 2.5" mounts, or the smaller "standard" balls? The 1.25" balls will slip with a 26-sized unit. My 2.5" mounts are rock solid. They mount laptops in Hummers in Iraq on the 2.5 mounts.

Posts: 2323 Location: Stevens Point, WI | Efly, I have used the 2.5 for multiple years, and yes, Karl is right on. You must not hit much for big waves or go fast enough in big waves if your units haven't moved. I have found a better mount that is waaaaaaaaay more rock solid than the Ram, it actually doesn't even compare it's that much better in my opinion. However, one little problem is, the mounts are discontinued so I've had to take them off my last three boats in order to keep them. You can still find them on Ebay every once in awhile. I should have bought a box of these when they were at Gander for half the price of a Ram, doh. Attachments ---------------- vtc_2-0001-1L.JPG (15KB - 149 downloads)

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | Maybe I'm just lucky. I cruise LSC in the 20's, 30's and low 40's through 2-3'ers and haven't had an issue with my 8 or my 27C. They'll move, but not enough that I have to reposition them along the way. I've used the small mounts, and they'd fall flat when I hit a wave. After I made the switch to the 2.5 mount, they've been solid.

Posts: 87 Location: Red Wing, Minnesota | I use both RAM and Johny Ray Mounts. I think any RAM will slip a little in the rough stuff. Ray mounts just WORK. A little less adjustability but they never slip. Plus they are a LOT cheaper. I like them both.
