Posts: 1916 Location: Greenfield, WI | I don't know how bad the gymnastics would be to record all the seminars, but would you guys be interested in getting DVD's of all the Seminars at the expo's? Imagine all that valuable information being available to those attending and those who can't get there! Working at the most of the muskie shows, I miss the majority of all the seminars, but knowing the speakers, it would seem the DVD's would be valuable. Do any of you see this as valuable or desirable? Posts: 433 Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | I caught almost all the seminars and the information was outstanding! I'd think there would be some kind of market for the seminars on DVD. The only problem is this year the screen didn't seem as visible as other years, too much incidental light hitting it. That might have made made it tough to do a quality video recording of the seminars. (Of course the conversation at the Slammer booth was pretty valuable too, and I STILL don't know nothin!)

Posts: 433 Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | I go to the show 80% for the seminars, 10% to talk to my friends at the booths, and maybe 10% to see tackle. As one speaker aptly put it, lures don't catch fish, knowledge does! On a DVD there is no chance for questions and answers afterward. If you don't have questions, I doubt you thought about what the presenter was laying out there for you to digest. While I'm listening, I'm also recalling past trips and trying to figure out how I could have applied the information to have made them better, looking at future trips where these tactics could be used and from that alone, there are always questions and by asking them the information becomes more relevant!

happy hooker - 2/15/2010 3:42 PM how do you compensate the speakers, its their product/seminar does it hurt show attendence if you know you can get the DVD anyways of the seminars if you dont go As usual Happy Hooker is right on the money. The seminar is the intellectual property of the presenter. He sells his speaking to the sport show promoter who in turn sells admission to his show. Both the seminar speakers and the promoter would therefore need to be compensated in some way. For those who would argue that you could just ignore the big name speakers and draw on "young guns" who are looking for exposure and would be willing to give up their intellectual property for free, ask yourself just how popular such a DVD would be. Would there be enough interest to make it worth the effort? There are only a handful of speakers who will draw a big crowd and their names are common in sport show seminar line-ups. Some speakers draw hundreds to a sport show seminar while some draw 20 or 30. Those who draw 20 or 30 may be just as good of fishermen as the big names but they may not yet have developed their persona in the industry or they just aren't very interesting to listen to. I hate to sound stuffy but as a motivational speaker and muskie fisherman I have an insider's/outsider's perspective to how all of this works, and these are the facts.

there are plenty of experts/guides/speaker type people putting out DVDs right now because it's a relatively inexpensive thing to do. some of them are just fishing, some are essentially advertisements, but many of them are educational and quite good - i think of the Lindners' Angling Edge, Gregg Thomas' videos, and the newest RedFin Outdoors DVDs as examples. i bet if someone had the time and desire to do so, they could get a fair number of speakers to allow their seminars and presentations to be collected on a DVD. it'd be good advertising for that person, so i'm sure that some at least would be willing to allow for it, or maybe in exchange for some royalities. by recording it at a fishing club meeting you would avoid having to pay the big expo producers, and it's the same seminar since most of them do the rounds each season giving the same presentation at the shows, clubs, etc. as noted by some, even if it could be done, the real question would be whether it'd sell enough to be worthwhile...personally, i don't think it'd sell that much. Posts: 433 Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | If you asked the speakers if they would be willing to donate any proceeds from the sale of this DVD to something like Operation Musky, do you think any would object? As long as no one was making money on the sale of the DVD they would not do their image much good by protesting, so do you think anyone would?
