I think they are closer to 8 oz. I really like the 8'6 Okuma XH, telescopic handle gets it under 8 foot for storage. About 120$, Lifetime gaurentee. Depending on your preferences, the 8'6 XXH might be more to your liking, it has a stiffer back bone.

Tooth Tamer Jawbreaker 8' or the new Tooth Tamer 8'6" or 7'6" Jawbreaker Jr. All retail for $150.00 and will throw Mag Dawgs well depending on your fishing style, The 8' Jawbreaker is super fast and is rated to 48oz, The Jrs have a softer tip and are rated 2 - 8oz

i second the 8'6" tooth Tamer xhvy. We worked hard last summer to design a stick that could double nicely for big double bladed tails, and rubber to mag dawg size. Good valued rod. Lots of options out there for you from many builders.

The Hulbert Musky Armor 9' rod would be perfect for Mag Dawgs. But it is also great for Dbl 10's, gliders, jerkbaits. This rod is in my opinion your best choice for all baits BUT Pounders or Mega D's. I bought one inearly August and is was the rod I used most this fall. I would also suggest a Pro Egde from Keith at www.proedgefishing.com. I ordered two of his rods in 08' and love those too, they run about $169.00 with zirconium upgrade on the line guides $190.00. You can pick your own thread colors and the coolest thing is having your name on your rod. Mine will be keepsakes for my kids. I will be ordering a third so each kid has one. If your interested in throwing Pounders I suggest Jame's Tackle Industries Mega Heavy. that is my new Pounder rod in a 9'. The handle is a little longer than the others and gives you extra leverage. My best advice is if you can get to one of the shows where you can feel the weight difference. Some are heavier in weight and that can make a difference in holding a rod all day. The Okuma rod is a little heavier than my Pro Edge and Hulbert that was the difference for me. Good Luck!!

8' Tooth Tamer JAWBREAKER. That rod is TOUGH. It's just unreal how well that rod throws and pulls Mag Dawgs.

If you want an 8 footer for actual fishing than I can’t help you with a suggestion. If you want an 8 footer for storage I would go with the telescopic Okuma 9’3” XH, great rod for Mag, Dawgs, I even used it to toss pounders for limited time. (All day pounding with pounders would probably require heaver rod, I use the telescopic Okuma 8’6”XXH) The guys that I know that are catching the most fish on Mag Dawgs are all talking about the importance of a long stick for better control and better hook sets. That’s why I went with the Okuma 9’3” my rod locker will only take an 8’er and when collapsed this rod fits easily in the locker, also a great rod for rip’n Triple Ds, big twitch baits, and for surface baits.

Good Luck.

Of course buy my Tackle Industries rod but I keep hearing so many good things about the 9'3" Okuma you guys are really making me want one. Do they come in an XXH? Love to hold one. Does Thorn Bros carry them?
TIA,
James

the musky innovation rods are great rods also,2-10 or 4-16 would be perfect for mag dawgs,I have the 2-10 and have used it for a season for dawgs and 10`s and love it.I also used it as a sucker rod when I first got it 2 falls ago, worked great for that also,I recently bought a 4-16 oz to only throw bigger stuff and I`m gonna use the 2-10 for 10`s and some gliders.

Hi James! Rollie and Helen's has the Okuma in the 9'3" XXH for $119.00 but I think it may be a little heavier. For the big stuff I think you rod will be toughto beat for the money! I love the Dominatrix's and the Booty Tails can't wait to fish them!

Take Care!

If money is a concern, the musky innovations evolution series are pretty decent rods. I would get the H, not XH, for just mag dawgs. I think they retail for $120 at most places, but I found them for $100 at Gander Mountain last summer (not sale priced). Would also make a decent rod for throwing double 10s. My buddy did have one of the heavies break on him though, but I liked my rods.

On a related topic, what does everyone use to throw pounders? I've been heaving them on 9' maina rods and it isn't too much of a problem, but there is too much play in them and I would like something a lot stiffer but still as long. I need the long rods because I catch a lot of muskies figure eighting the pounder.

Toad, you should consider the premier 86XHF. You could have it built to 9' by Keith or another maker. Biddler and I use it and love it.

i second the croix premeir / legend 8'6" xhf. i use the legend version but from what i understand the premier pretty much "feels" the same. i had keith at proedge build mine and had it made with a longer butt handle section...around 17" or so. that helps so much when throwing big heavy baits...

I own and use up to $400 rods including custom rods built for me. Got a Tackle Industries rod from James a few months ago and I will probably never get another $400 as long as he is making these. Not sure how he is putting together a rod like this with all of the bells and whistles he has on them but the rod I got is about the best rod in my boat. Not for the money but just the best rod in my boat. I got the 8' XH and it is a dream rod for about everything. Talked with him about the blank and it shows that he designed them to his specifications. He told me he knows some things about materials and building. Enough to get him into trouble. Well, looks like it was enough knowledge to build his company one heck of a rod. Good rod! Getting two more soon.

Tooth Tamer 8' Jawbreaker XXXH is rated up to 48 oz. I thow mostly mag dawgs but I do have a couple of pounders that I throw with the Jawbreaker and I don't have any problems with it.

When I built my rod, I had two main lures in mind...double 10's and mag dawgs. My 9 foot Musky Armor rod is an awesome rod for slinging mag dawgs....almost makes it effortless and the rod weighs alot less than other rods out there, less fatigue after a long day of fishing. Plus they are also priced in your range as well...$130.00

If your gonna compare rods for tossing mag dawgs, check out my signature series 9 ft rods, haven't gotten any bad feed back yet.

We will also be getting the prototype "pounder" rods in about a month...should be pretty sweet as well. Light weight and strong enough for launching pounders, should be a great combination!!!

I also like the new Tooth Tamer trolling 8'er for tossing the lber. It is a slightly heavier rod than some mentioned, but loads up nicely with the big lure. I didn't really care for the fact that the trolling rod is a bit heavier than what we asked for, and that will probably change, but it is a great rod for trolling heavy lures/boards, and tossing the lber.

In Milwaukee the Top Predator booth by the lure testing tank will have one to look at. Just ask for Tom. If you like them, I will extend my $100 delivered deal for this month since I was unable to get some to the show in time. Just email me at [email protected] after the show.
Thanks,
James
